Unable to configure my Exchange email in Surface mail program

First off, it's too bad Microsoft couldn't include Outlook with the other Office products.  In any case, I have had no problem configuring my exchange email address on my iPhone, iPad, PC laptop.  I've tried all sorts of combinations for server and domain, including the one I use for my iPhone, but not success!  Very frustrating.

Suppose my domain name was mydomain. On my iPhone I leave "domain" blank. I put in for server: webmail.mydomain.com.

I've tried that, I've tried addition both mydomain and mydomain.com to domain.  I've tried adding https:// to URL and also adding /owa at end (which I need for web log on).

On top of that after trying several combos Mail program presents me with blank screen, and I have to reset to get the screen back.

Not a happy camper!

    HalGoldstein, it's possible the reason you can't set up your e-mail account is on account of the server you use.

    I too tried for two hours yesterday to set up my e-mail account. At one point I got so frustrated so I decided to try and see if I could set up my gmail account. That worked fine so I went back to trying to set up the email account I use on a daily bases.

    After trying every type of set up and every possible combination, I finally did a search on my server's site to see if there were instructions for setting up an Outlook account and found out my server doesn't support Windows 8 mail.

    I can get my e-mail on the web so I ended up pinning a link to my web based e-mail account. Perhaps in time my ISP will get with the program.

    We have our own Windows 2007 Server Small Business Exchange set up. I've just emailed our Admin to read this thread. Maybe he can help.

    I hope you get some help. Apparently people have been asking my isp if they're going to offer imap and so far they don't seem to care about it.

    I don't understand why the way you get or received mail had to change. Maybe it has something to do with security? No idea though but Windows 8 doesn't use pop any more and my isp doesn't use imap so I can't use the mail app which is a disappointment.

    Based on my experience adding our business Exchange account to my surface, my guess is it is because of a certificate issue.  If the mail client doesn't "trust" the certificate, it will not add the account.

    If it is an SBS server, usually the Server Self-Signed certificate is located in C:\UserShares\Public\Public Downloads.  Just place a copy in the "Trusted Root Certificates" and you should be good to go.

    Unless you manually copy and add a self-signed certificate to your surface, it will not allow you to access mail from it.

    Hi j_hall. You may be correct. We have a SBS and we're "not trusted".  Hopefully, the matter is simple as you describe and our tech can fix.

    Still from the user experience, since it works with other devices, I would not expect the problem, and I prefer to spend my time doing other things rather than troubleshooting.  I guess however that is the penalty for be being the first to try a new product, especially given Microsoft's reputation of putting products out, getting feedback (and fixing bugs), and having a great product by v3.0.
