Can Surface pro run dual external monitors?

With the ports configuration and specs of the announced Surface Pro, can one run  dual external monitors? By that I mean connecting two external monitors, one for primary display and one for extended display. Irrelevant what shows on the actual Surface screen.

This is the current configuration I have for my heavy laptop (with docking station) and want to recreate it if I swap to the cool Surface Pro.

I don't mind buying some port replicators, as long as the set-up works seamlessly once connected. I saw some other threads and no docking station is planned by Microsoft at this stage

Greetings ManlioV,

That's a great question. Because the Surface Pro is running Windows 8, you could get a USB port hub and USB video cards and the Surface Pro would be able to install the drivers so you could hook up multiple monitors that way.

    Shortly after I purchased my first Surface pro in 2013 I set it up with dual Monitors without any Problems. I use the Matrox DualHead2GO Digital SE.

    This is a definite NO. There is only one USB port and one display port. You can try a display port splitter but I would not bet on it. You can also try the external USB hub/video card solution but that is a lot of headache I can guarantee. Example:

    A docking solution for the Surface may come out (there are extra pins on the keyboard input for the Pro as opposed to the RT and there has been no release of info regarding what they are for) but do not hold your breath.

    Intel has a new wireless docking solution that is available on the Dell Latitude 6430u and a select few other machines not yet released. That is no doubt what will be used for Surface Pro v2.

    You could, potentially, use the above adapter as well as the display port and have dual monitors but would lose your USB ports. You would have to have a USB hub connected to the USB port and then connect the above adapter to that hub and hope it works. My guess is that most USB video adapters will not work behind a hub but again, you would have to test through trial and error. As this is very much an unsupported solution, don't count on MS helping out.

    If you do this and it works, please let us know!!! This would be awesome if it did work and you kept your USB 3 speeds.

    Does this answer mean that there will be no actual docking station released for the Surface Pro? An associate at the Microsoft store speculated months ago that there would be one. We are looking at purchasing these for a business setup, but the ability to dock them into a multiple monitor/Ethernet environment is pretty crucial. I am hoping that Microsoft has given the tablet the capability for at least third party products to support this.
