Surface Dock Keeps Disconnecting Intermittently

Microsoft,

What is going on with this thing?

I have had the Surface Dock for two months now. Purchased it to go with my Surface Laptop 1.

Every day.... and I mean every day, this thing disconnects itself from my Surface Laptop, my monitor goes black, my usb peripherals disconnect, and my network goes down... and then in one second everything magically reconnects.

Sometimes it only happens 5 times a day. Other days it happens like a gazillion.

Once it first started happening, I scoured the internet looking for a solution. I replaced the dock, I updated the firmware, I connected it to a different power source, I've power cycled, I've turned the cord around - etc. No matter what I do it keeps happening.

And there is no good answers on this message board that seems to fix this issue. I have read them all.

What is going on with this thing?

Right now, just so y'all know, this thing is only acting as a power source for my laptop. I am plugging the monitor directly into the Surface Laptop, I have upgraded to a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and my Ethernet is going into the system over usb. Even with NOTHING else plugged into the Surface Dock.... nothing. Just power. It is STILL disconnecting and reconnecting intermittently. What the H?!?

This is unacceptable and you guys really need to figure out a solution for this. My boss has a Surface Book 1 and he also experiences these issues daily, as well. Since he's using dual monitors, he just puts up with them going out and turning back on five to twenty times a day. The only ones in the office with the dock that aren't experiencing these issues are the two that have Surface Pro 4's...

What can we do to fix this? The Surface Dock is currently the most expensive laptop charger I've ever purchased (since that's all it seems to be decent at).

Sincerely,

Microsoft Enthusiast

I have the same problem with my Surface Book 2 and Surface Book 3. I have three different Surface Dock units for these devices. They all have this problem. I'm done with Microsoft hardware. None of my other non-Microsoft PCs behave like this. It is extremely frustrating to have the monitors constantly blanking out. I spend far too much time just trying to get the hardware to work and continue working. It's a huge waste of time.

It definitely seems to be a firmware update thing, at least for me. With the event viewer I can see error events aligning to each screen interupt. Something is promoting Windows to try and install a firmware update to the dock. The firmware update fails & in doing so the dock then restarts itself.

Getting a new dock does not solve the problem. Surface Dock (1) and Surface Dock 2 both have the same problem. I know, I stupidly bought Surface Dock 2 hoping it would solve the disconnect issue. It doesn't.

Thank you and the other posters for this discussion

I've had a similar problem although not as frequent. - I have one monitor, printer, external storage,  and Ethernet connection running through the surface dock.

The dock seems to regularly disconnect and reconnect one or more of those devices and sometimes all, including the power.

I keep getting a popup message asking what I want to do with my external drive and then every time I want to use my printer, it's offline.

I will sit down to my surface plugged into the dock and the battery is almost drained and not connected to the Internet.

I was thinking I just needed to get a new Dock, but after reading your problems it sounds like that won't help.  All my drivers are updated as far as I can tell.

I may see if the problem is lessened by having fewer things hooked up

    Thanks

okay People, I have been suffering with this ever since I bought my first surface book 2 - one month ago.  At first I though I got a lemon, but after doing extensive research, I realized this is a common issue.

I believe I have found a solution, at least for my problem, And it might possibly help you too. All I did was Update my NVDIA graphics driver.  Yes, that's it.  I downloaded the auto Driver installer package- it's like 600 MB file.  Update and restarted a few time and viola the issue seems to have disappeared- at least for now.    I was getting disconnected  once every 3- 5 mins.  Yes, it was that bad.  But it only happened when I was actually doing work , and almost never when I was just watching Youtube or movies.

Anyways, It's been 3 days since I had my last disconnect. and that was just before I updated the driver.  Fingers crossed.  Give it a go, what do you have to lose.

    Thanks.
