Surface Book 2: External Monitor Flickering

I bought a Surface Book 2 last month.  Yesterday, I started using it with an external monitor (connected to the SB through a HDMI to USB-C adapter). 

The external monitor flickers and disconnects once every 2 minutes, and then returns, only to flicker/disconnect again, repeatedly.  This makes working with an external monitor unbearable.

I see that many people have asked similar question re. the SB, but I could not find a reliable and actionable solution.

Can you please help me?

    I am using a 3' DP to HDMI cable. Works great.

    I'm using a longer HDMI cable for an HDTV but it will only work with an active adapter to boost the signal. For a 4K monitor I use a DP cable. The Surface Book puts out such a weak signal it's better to use DP if you can.

    Unfortunately the Surface Book will only use the Intel processor as a display adapter.

    OK I figured out how to change the refresh rate but the problem is now worse if anything.

    The adapter properties for the surface book 2 display (display 1) and the external monitor both state "Intel (R) UHD Graphics 620" as the adapter type - shouldn't they be running on the Nvidia graphics card? I've got the Surface book 2 13.5 inch with the performance base, 16gb ram, intel i7 8th gen with NVIDIA GeForce Discrete Graphics card.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    How does one change the refresh rate? can't find any instructions that allow me to do it - I can see the refresh rate in the settings but cannot determine anywhere that lets me change it.

    Any help greatly appreciated. It seems mad that a £2k surface book 2 can't do what my £350 surface go can do with its USB C port.
