I'm really frustrated with this as well. I almost had a surface sold to a buddy and then whammo, this happens. My problem is that it is showing:
Digital Audio (HDMI)
High Definition Audio Device
Not Plugged In
It looked like it did add a generic Non PNP display. I'm wondering if that's the problem. I wonder if I changed the driver to an HDMI display adapter, but where can I get that?
One way to check on this: With the HDMI cable connected from the Surface to the device you want sound from, in the Start screen bring up the Charms and type 'Screen resolution' in the Search box. Go to Settings, select Adjust screen resolution.
Does the device report as a display there? What type of display?
It shows a Generic Non-PNP monitor.
I looked at Events and it looks like it was added yesterday.
The inf file is monitor.inf
When the cable is hooked up, the surface goes to a 4:3 with black bars screen while the TV is full screen.
Should I try to force a particular .inf through an update driver? If so, which one?
Can I attach an image here? I could show what it looked like in control panel.
Also, I meant to write that I plugged my HP TM2 win7 machine up with a regular HDMI cable (the surface was plugged in using a Micro HDMI to HDMI cable, so I was not using a 40$ MS adapter) and everything worked fine.
