I connected my Surface via HDMI to watch some movies on the home theater system, but I'm only hearing sound through the Surface speakers. How do I get audio to go through HDMI so that I can use my nice home theater sound system?

Hi all.
I found probably a solution. When I connected the HDMI I only heard the sound in the surface and at the sound devices box the HDMI option won't appear, so I get in into Device Manager and Right click on my Surface and Scan for HW changes, then the sound starts to listen on the Home Theater. I expect this probably works in most of cases like me.

Please contact the manufacturer of you television for furthers support and possible firmware updates. This feature works with other TVs.
Use the Sound applet in control panel to check what audio devices are installed. If you have a choice make sure the right one is selected.
With 11 pages on this thread and it is already answered few are going to see your question and have you read it through and looked at the possible solutions? If you have then it might be better to start your own question.
Detail what you have tried and what your hardware is, with laptops because everything is on the motherboard getting audio onto the HDMI is normally inbuilt but with desktops it could be different. Even with a desktop if you are using an integrated HDMI/sound card then that is the same as a laptop but if you have a discrete graphics/sound interface then that requires different settings.
Lack of legacy support as in the Power Type Cover not supporting the original SRT. .
No, the original rt simply doesn't have the physical connectors. It has nothing to do with "legacy support" from the power cover. Did you want the cover to magically change the hardware? :)
Well here's another one. Once in a while I'll stream Hulu or Netflix from my SRT to my home theater, so through my NAD receiver to my JVC projector. Did it twice pre 8.1 update. Early evening tonight I streamed Hulu direct to a Samsung TV (a mildly older 720p set (more on that annoyance later). Now home on a date, and I connect the SRT with the same cable as before to my receiver, and I get a picture but sound comes through the SRT speakers. When I open the sound properties I get some Sharp HDMI issue and asked if I want to disable it. Though I don't see a Sharp icon anywhere. I see the Samsung one from earlier, but that's about it. I also have the generic PnP Monitor as well.
So audio is issue one. Issue two is why I can't stream to a 720p TV as a second screen and continue working on the tablet because the resolution isn't high enough. Is this some stupid Windows 8 limitation that makes no sense? This should be basic 101.
It's funny, I'm so not an Apple fan. Very much in Android's camp and was hoping with the SRT, the only android device I'd have would be my phone. But apparently that doesn't seem to be so. I'm not streaming Hulu via my Android tablet and Chromecast. As Apple fans often say when asked with they have an iphone, "It simply just works." Android has become that way, and W8 simply is not. Not only has RT become such a fiasco due to inept marketing, lack of sales and OEM's pulling out. A lack of 3rd party support (no, not just apps but simple cloud syncing from 3rd parties is just plain annoying), no Miracast support on the SRT even though the hardware and OS support it. Lack of legacy support as in the Power Type Cover not supporting the original SRT. Not to mention SRT owners get zero SkyDrive love yet Surface 2 and now Windows Phone owners get free storage. A phone people can get for $60 outright or free contract gets free SkyDrive storage but spend $200-300 on an SRT and you get nothing which hurts worse since you can't local sync cloud storage outside of SkyDrive, and 8.1 further restricted SkyDrive where you can't just drop the Dropbox folder in and keep both services synced like you can with Google Drive and Dropbox. Makes my Chromebook more of a business tool than an SRT believe it or not.
So I can no longer boast and brag about the SRT. It's become a consumption device like my Android tablet used to be. Frustrating.
