I connected my Surface via HDMI to watch some movies on the home theater system, but I'm only hearing sound through the Surface speakers. How do I get audio to go through HDMI so that I can use my nice home theater sound system?

Hi all.
I found probably a solution. When I connected the HDMI I only heard the sound in the surface and at the sound devices box the HDMI option won't appear, so I get in into Device Manager and Right click on my Surface and Scan for HW changes, then the sound starts to listen on the Home Theater. I expect this probably works in most of cases like me.

Please contact the manufacturer of you television for furthers support and possible firmware updates. This feature works with other TVs.
Use the Sound applet in control panel to check what audio devices are installed. If you have a choice make sure the right one is selected.
With 11 pages on this thread and it is already answered few are going to see your question and have you read it through and looked at the possible solutions? If you have then it might be better to start your own question.
Detail what you have tried and what your hardware is, with laptops because everything is on the motherboard getting audio onto the HDMI is normally inbuilt but with desktops it could be different. Even with a desktop if you are using an integrated HDMI/sound card then that is the same as a laptop but if you have a discrete graphics/sound interface then that requires different settings.
Lack of legacy support as in the Power Type Cover not supporting the original SRT. . No, the original rt simply doesn't have the physical connectors. It has nothing to do with "legacy support" from the power cover. Did you want the cover to magically change the hardware? :) no ****, really? wow....ugh. The point is, from a design and engineering point of view, this should've been thought of. Having an extra pinout or two for future use is not asking a whole lot when designing a premium product. Again, this was a product designed to compete with android and ios yet is was priced at double if not more than much of the android competition. Something like thinking ahead with future accessories should not be an afterthought in this day and age. Not to mention it being doubtful the power cover wasn't already being designed when the original RT came out. Just like the free SkyDrive storage as well as typical upgraded features, it's just another way to try and get you to upgrade. I bought a 20" tv in 1989 that had a jack panel that rivaled ones today and had a multiport for future use so it didn't become obsolete. I paid a few more dollars for it, but it lasted up until 5yrs ago as a bedroom tv for my mom. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back onto this topic, this seems more like an 8.1 RT issue. Didn't seem to be a problem in 8. It affects the Surface 2 as well. And many people are having the issue and some, like myself, didn't have the problem using the same cable before the 8.1 update. Glad I have a Chromecast.

Do not get sound only Video.
Same issue here, but on Surface 2. Similar TV (37" version). Video works fine, but no audio. At first it worked fine when I went to the sound options and tested the speaker, but since I paused video playback and the tablet locked, audio has never worked again. I tried disconnecting/reconnecting, different port on my TV, restarting, and pretty much everything suggested in this thread. When not plugged in, my TV model number shows up in sound options, but when I plug in, it simply disappears. My friend brought over his Lumia 2520 and the audio worked fine, so I don't believe anything is wrong with my wire. Love this tablet, but this is quite frustrating.
