While this is an old issue that can happen repeatedly for various reasons, I will post the same helpful fix I use repeatedly as well with the original source with it. So the issue can arise due to various reasons (1 and 2 for me):
- Laptop/tablet/Surface Pro 4 went into screensaver modus while connected to an external monitor through an HDMI cable.
2. Laptop/tablet/Surface Pro 4 went into standby/sleep/hibernate modus while connected to an external monitor through an HDMI cable.3. Laptop/tablet/Surface Pro 4 did not show the HDMI audio at all upon connecting the cable; mind you, this might actually
be after 1 or 2 happened to you without you noticing it.
Solution to reasons 1 and 2:

,,Actually, I found going into Device Manager and disabling and then re-enabling the "Intel(R) Display Audio" driver solved the problem for me.
- Right click on the start button, and select "Device Manager", or press WIN+R and type "devmgmt.msc".
- Look for "Sound, video, and game controllers," and expand its section.
- Right click on "Intel(R) Display Audio," and select "Disable."
- Then right click it again, this time selecting "Enable."
This was done on the anniversary update with the latest drivers. You may have to try unplugging and then plugging back in the HDMI cable between steps 3 and 4.''
I hope this can help more people in the future as well and I hope Microsoft fixes this bug in a later update. They can even build in a temporary fix to just disable and enable this particular driver when bringing the Surface Pro
out of sleep/hibernate/screensaver modus so we don't have to go through it manually.
Good luck humans.
