Is Audio Supported Over HDMI?

I connected my Surface via HDMI to watch some movies on the home theater system, but I'm only hearing sound through the Surface speakers. How do I get audio to go through HDMI so that I can use my nice home theater sound system?

Hi all.

I found probably a solution. When I connected the HDMI I only heard the sound in the surface and at the sound devices box the HDMI option won't appear, so I get in into Device Manager and Right click on my Surface and Scan for HW changes, then the sound starts to listen on the Home Theater. I expect this probably works in most of cases like me.

Please contact the manufacturer of you television for furthers support and possible firmware updates.  This feature works with other TVs.

Use the Sound applet in control panel to check what audio devices are installed. If you have a choice make sure the right one is selected.

With 11 pages on this thread and it is already answered few are going to see your question and have you read it through and looked at the possible solutions? If you have then it might be better to start your own question.

Detail what you have tried and what your hardware is, with laptops because everything is on the motherboard getting audio onto the HDMI is normally inbuilt but with desktops it could be different. Even with a desktop if you are using an integrated HDMI/sound card then that is the same as a laptop but if you have a discrete graphics/sound interface then that requires different settings.

    Thanks for your help and suggestions. Perhaps this could help with the investigations too:

    I have tried on two different flat screen Full HD TVs (LG 55LM670S-ZA and a Sony 52"), using two different HDMI cables and three different Surface devices. My findings:

    Surface RT 32GB and Surface RT 64GB models, updated to Windows 8.1 with all recent updates:

    You plug in the HDMI cable, the sound switches automatically to the Digital Audio (HDMI) device(on both TVs and with both Surface RT devices)

    Surface 2 32GB, with Windows 8.1 and all recent updates (right up to 3/11/2014 Firmware update):

    You plug in the HDMI cable, the sound does not switch automatically. However, as soon as you go to the desktop, right click on the Speaker icon in taskbar, and click on Playback devices, the audio switches to the HDMI device automatically. But you have to do this operation every time.

    I tried using different cables but it made no difference.

    Because the same TVs were automatically detected and switched to by the Surface RT but not the Surface 2, this makes me wonder if it could be device driver issue. Do you know of any differences between the original Surface RT and the Surface 2 specific to this?

    If you want, I can send you a steps recorder log to illustrate.

    I connected the surcafe with my haier tv but there is no sound through the tv's speakers. Besides, I found out the surface cannot recognize the tv at all. The hdmi port works just fine for my labtop. There is any solution I can do to fix it? Thanks.

    On another note,  this is ridiculous. My RT worked fine with hdmi until the 8.1 update. I've had three RT's nice eand not one has sent audio through hdmi. You get Microsoft people coming in here giving a bullsh*t answer and passing the buck. Then they disappear and offer zero support. 

    It  is the same in every  thread when there is a genuine issue. What's the point of posting in the first place?
