Surface touch screen works with pen, but not my finger

I can use my pen with the touch screen, but my Surface doesn't respond when I use my finger. What is the issue?

I have already restarted twice. I don't think it's an update problem because I just downloaded updates two days ago.

Hi uteweatherman

Thank you for reaching out to us on the community forum and thank you for your question. I understand you are having finger input issues on your Pro 3 device. I'm here to help.

I'd like to know more details:

  • You said the Pro pen works fine but it doesn't respond to your fingers, correct? Are you using the finger and the pen at the same time?

When you bring Surface Pen close to the touchscreen, a point appears on the screen and the screen ignores other input such as your hand resting on the screen. You can relax and write or draw as you would with a regular pen and paper.

  • Do you have all updates? Just to be sure, you can see the detailed update information for Pro3 here.****

If you still have issues with touch, I'd suggest the following:

Please reply back and let us know.

Best Regards,

Clare

I found that the screen was not responsive this way when the original power cord adapter or a replacement power cord adapter was plugged in. The screen was a bit warm, but not hot. I unplugged the power cord, and the full screen functionality came back.

After trying several different adapters, I found one from the original manufacturer. It does not have the USB port, but otherwise, it works well.

The power cord adapter for the Surface Pro 2 seems to have been a flawed design or a lemon in production. You can't buy them anymore and I can't get the original cord replaced through my warranty with Best Buy. Microsoft did a redesign for the Pro 3. Rather than acknowledge a defect and replace all the Surface Pro 2 power cords, Microsoft seems to be just ignoring the problem (like Dell did with a large group of defective motherboards). Not a wise long-term strategy.
