Surface Pro 3 external monitor / display port issues

I know many people have been having issues with external monitors and the displayport connections on the Surface Pro 3 and Surface dock.  I've been having some issues too, and thought I'd share my config / workarounds in case it helps. I believe the issue is fundamentally with the Surface video drivers getting confused, not the docking station.

My explicit questions are: Is there an easy way to force it to detect new displays?  Anybody have any other suggestions on how to resolve this?  Is there some way to open a formal technical ticket with MS?

My hardware: Surface Pro 3 i7, 256 GB; Surface docking station, 2 HP Z24i displays (1920x1200 resolution each), StarTech Mini DisplayPort 1.2 to Triple Head DisplayPort MST Hub (StarTech PN# MSTMDP123DP)

It's setup as follows: Mini DisplayPort MST Hub plugged into back of docking station, HP monitors plugged into ports 1 and 2 of the hub.

I've had this setup running for about 2 weeks. At first I couldn't get it working, but with the last firmware update in mid August it started working fine.

HOWEVER, just this week I've had issues where I can't get the Surface to detect the displays / output to them when I first plug in to the dock in the morning OR sometimes when it's waking up from going to sleep (like at lunchtime). No amount of fiddling / plugging / unplugging things seems to consistently fix it.  The 'Detect' button in the Screen Resolution window doesn't help.  Doing a shutdown / restart of the Surface also doesn't consistently work. Note that when the Surface gets like this, even plugging the Hub directly into the mini display port on the Surface itself (with it not docked) won't work.

The reason I believe this is a Surface / Windows issues is that when it gets into this state, within the screen resolution settings in windows it often thinks that there is another active display plugged in and will act as such (e.g. lets me extend or duplicate the desktop) - even if I have the surface completely undocked, not plugged into anything. Specifically it says it is a "Display device on: Mobile PC Display" with a resolution lower than 1024 x 768.  See pic below.  This state often survives through a reboot of the Surface.

The general process I usually get to work after a couple tries:

-Use Windows-P keys to set the surface to use only the internal display

-Shutdown the surface and undock

-Unplug the dock and hub

-Plug hub back in

-Power Surface back up while undocked and login

-Dock surface

-Plug dock back in

-I'll know it works at this point because the displays will automatically come on (no need to use windows-P key to toggle them)

NOTE TO FORUM MODS:

Before you reply with your standard questions, know that I've already done all the normal things, including shutdown, check all cables, all updates installed, run the hardware and devices troubleshooter.  I've also checked related threads, such as: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surfpro3-surfdevice/external-display-flicker/1e2b9154-0533-4137-880f-55a90d2d6659?page=1&tm=1409850909719 (Note I've never had an issue with flicker) and http://www.surfaceforums.net/threads/mini-displayport-on-new-docking-station-doesnt-work.10577/ (This isn't an active vs. passive adapter thing.)  Once I get it working it works just fine until the surface undocks or reboots.  It's clearly an issue with Windows / Surface not properly detecting displays.

One odd thing I noticed when my 2 monitors are connected to the StarTech and working, is that in the Display>Screen Resolution screen Windows 8 has detected my two monitors and the SP3 screen fine, and numbered them 1 (SP3 screen), 2 (24" SyncMaster) and 3 (34" SE790) . However if I press Identify, then the numbers 1, 2, 3 displayed, don't match that. Windows shows a 1 on the 34" SE790, a 2 on the SP3, and a 3 on the 24" SyncMaster.

Do any of you have the same? Perhaps this is part of the cause of the problems we have.

So today has been an encouraging day...  I am using my SP3 with Windows 10 technical preview and the Startech MST hub.  It has been a complete nightmare, particularly with the latest build, with hangs and crashes, display issues etc which were forcing me to restart the machine every couple of hours. I tried all the fixes and advice but the fact was the SP3 was perfect when running the internal display only but completely unreliable when docked and using multi-monitors. (Note: I'm not complaining about Win 10 reliability issues as I am beta testing and so I expect issues).

Yesterday MS released a new version of the Windows 10 preview (build 10074) and I did a complete fresh install and today I haven't had a single problem, the monitors all work and I can go in and out of sleep with it waking up properly and the displays all connecting. It started off badly as only 1 of my 2 external monitors was detected and MS are moving the display settings from their traditional home to a "modern" settings app, but once I found the old settings I set up the second display and everything worked.

In fact, the latest Win 10 build introduces a feature that when fully implemented and reliable gives much better multi monitor support compared to Windows 8.x.  You can now set proper display scaling independently for each monitor - until now I either set the scaling for my external monitors and the inbuilt screen text was really small and hard to read, or the inbuilt screen was normal but the external monitors displayed text that was scaled too large and wasn't crisp.

I'm not suggesting people upgrade to the Windows 10 preview unless they know what they are doing, and I'm also not saying that these issues are all fixed (I bet I have a really bad day tomorrow having made all these positive comments!), but if Windows 10 is going to be a route to solving (and improving) the multi monitor support then at least everyone has some hope that this may be resolved when Win 10 is launched later this year (and remember it will be a free upgrade for all existing Win 7 and Win 8 users).

I'll check-in in a few days and let you all know if it is still working well..

Thanks for the update - it does give me some hope to know that MS are aware this is still an issue.

I'm using the SP3 with Windows 10 preview and it's an absolute nightmare. I know this is a beta OS so I can't really complain about any problems on that OS, but it seems it's the same issue as those running Win8.1.

Given that the SP3 is their flagship device and Win10 is soon to be their flagship OS, does this really mean that in Redmond there is nobody running them together on a multi-monitor setup? If they were it would be fixed by now!

Fingers crossed for the next update!

StarTech support have asked me to exchange my hub, thinking it's faulty, so I will be trying out another one next week.

Unfortunately I can report that the replacement hub did not solve the issues.

    OK. I have another update.

A guy at Microsoft suggested I buy the 2 port MST Hub, http://www.club-3d.com/index.php/products/reader.en/product/multi-stream-transport-mst-hub.1649.html and try that as that should have an updated chipset I think.

Anyway, it didn't work and it does exactly the same thing as the 3 port hub.

I also spoke to another person at Microsoft, who is a technical expert.

He said that they are aware of the issues with MST hubs and the Surface Pro 3 and he also said that the March update should have fixed it. It obviously didn't.

They are trying to find the root cause of the issue but as it stands, there doesn't seem to be a fix.

I'm going to try and factory default my Surface and start from the ground up to see if that helps.

    Clutching at straws now!
