Bluetooth Surface Keyboard keeps disconnects from my surface book 2

I am also experiencing the exact same symptoms. After 30 minutes of not using the keyboard, I'd come back to find the keyboard is not "waking up". It's happening throughout the day and every time I would need to re-establish the BT connection (unpair/pair).

My setup is:

Surface Pro 7 running Windows 10 2004 (Build 19041.388)

Microsoft Surface Ergonomic Keyboard

This is what I have done…

• Uninstalled Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center application
• Unpair (removed) ALL BT devices and removed all other devices in Settings\Bluetooth & other devices
• Restart the PC
• Once all BT devices are removed (completely empty), start adding (pairing) devices one by one
• Installed Microsoft Precision Mouse
• Installed Microsoft Surface Ergonomic Keyboard
• Download the latest version for Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center
• Since I am using the Surface Dock 2 it automatically connected…
• Surface Ethernet Adapter
• MX279 (Monitor)
• I also connected my XBOX One

With just the above, so far for the last 24 hours have not experience the behavior. I believe there is an interference with my other BT devices. I am going to adding one BT device at a time and see if the issue comes back. I suspect it's my BT headset (Surface Earbuds) that is conflicting with the keyboard as this is the most recent device I've added. If this is the cause, I will check for updated drivers for the headset.

I had the same problem with my Surface Studio 2 with the Surface KB disconnecting after idle use.  Then one day, the problem just went away.  I didn't do any changes - problem just fixed itself.

I also have the same issue. It has to do with the way the firmware goes into sleep (IoT Engineer here). I'm not running a surface but am using the keyboard with a real Win10 PC. Instead of unpairing and pairing the keyboard again, go to device manager. open the bluetooth tree right click on "Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator" and "Microsoft Bluetooth Keyboard" and disable them both. then re-enable them in the same order. keep hitting the windows key and eventually you menu will open. 

    The main issue seems to be in the power setting to save battery life. With BLE devices, a deep sleep is possible to get the longest life out of the power supply. normally going into the settings for the device and deselecting the "Let Windows Control the Power" this would be fixed. however; the firmware on the keyboard and the driver do not match properly. There is no command on the chipset inside the keyboard to wake it from a sleep and the drivers contiune to limit power usage when a key is not being pressed. it's a dilemma of the hardware team and the software team not truly working together. 

    Hope someone will find this useful. by no means is this a fix. This is just a work around so that the device doesn't need to be paired over and over again.

Same issue here. I'm using two different surface ergonomic keyboards on 2 win10 desktops PC (my home pc and my work pc)

They both disconnect erratically once in while to the point I can't even type or work anymore. 

I tried updating drivers (intel bluetooth), I have my motherboard firmware and drivers up to date too, I have windows latest version on both machines. It's been happening for more than 6 months now.

The only fix when it happens is to restart.

It's becoming more and more annoying.

Seriously MS, sync your software and hardware teams and find us a solution.

Those are expensive premium keyboards, they should not behave like cheap knockoff products.

I'm CONVINCED this was a driver issue all along - *at least for me.*My situation:

I have the Microsoft Surface Keyboard and Mouse. Paired with my Surface 4 Pro, I never, not once had an issue. For about 6 months, nothing.

I moved on from the Surface to a Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, and every now and then, the keyboard would disconnect. Not the mouse, not my headset, just the keyboard. 

This drove me to formatting the laptop and starting fresh, which I was thinking of doing anyways as I'm not a fan of out of the factory setups. 

It got worse!

I tried everything on this site and other sites, over and over... Eventually, and as Lynton Brown mentions in their post on August 4, 2020 - I noticed that if I just press the windows key and wait - it comes online. I got into the habit of pressing Caps Lock on the laptop keyboard so I knew when the Surface keyboard connected, as its light would also come on.

If I wasn't so busy at the moment, I was considering another format.

BUT THEN...

Windows updates came and went and shortly thereafter one of the many 'tools' I've installed during this venture popped up. "Laptop Firmware and Bluetooth Driver updates are available". I jumped on this, and it's worked!!! I don't know why it took a few months to get the driver - beta testing maybe?!

I'm hoping there's no eggs left to hatch, and my chicken count is good - but since this update, my keyboard hasn't disconnected once.
