Screen variation - yellow hazy line down left side, also yellow tint to left half of screen.

So, love my Surface Pro 3. However, I'm having some issues with the screen and wanted to see how common they are.

  1. There's a yellow hazy line down the left-hand side of the screen, about 1/4 of an inch think or so, I'm not sure if was there when  purchased my unit shortly after launch or if it's developed in the meantime. It also might be getting worse, but it's hard to tell. I'll note that the screen also shows distortion along this same line when applying pressure on a dark backlit screen (e.g., the boot screen), and that might indicate some kind of adhesion issue that's letting light through. I don't think it's an adhesive issue, but it could be, I suppose; of so, then it's not going away and again I don't remember seeing it when I purchased the machine.
  2. Perhaps related, perhaps not, I also have a yellow tint to the left half of the screen. Again, I don't know if this is new or not, or if I just noticed it and now can't un-see it.

Anybody else having these issues? I know of at least a few other people who have #1, and I just want to have a sense of whether it's worth swapping out at this point or waiting until some of these hardware kinks are worked out. I have the Microsoft Complete warranty, and so I don't anticipate any issues with swapping for a new replacement at some point. If it's a common issue, however, I don't want to swap until Microsoft has had a chance to fix it.

other folks with this issue have gone to a Microsoft Store and exchanged their

SP3's. if these yellow lines are present when the machine is cool, then get it

exchanged as quickly as you can.

  1. take anything you're told on eBay with a grain of salt. caveat emptor.
  2. not a known issue for massive amounts of people
  3. you won't know the real warranty until you get the serial number and attempt to register it.
  4. we don't know if it will get worse

If it were me, I'd stay away from this "deal". anything that looks too good to be true...

Just to share my experience with the exchange service..

My new SP3 which was bought back in June, and just out of luck the touch screen was not responding after 1 month of use, so I contact the MS support for replacement (which really suck cuz i use brand new one for a rebrushed one).   BTW I got mine in Taiwan which do not have MS store for assistance, only phone support.

Anyway, the replacement was quickly send back after 5 days, but as I turn it on, i saw "the yellow line" immediately.  So I contact the support line again.   This time they asked more questions than before, and keep telling me to update first and then phone back for support, which is quite annoying, cuz this is very clear a hardware failure and they keep want to persuade me that it can be fixed by updating.  At the end, they asked me to send some photos of the yellow line, and after reveiwing my photos, finally they accepted my exchange request.  But this time it took about 14 days before I get my unit back.  And everytime I phone to ask when I can receive my unit, all the answer i get is "Sorry, now it's out of stock, so we can't send you the unit."  And "Sorry we don't know when we will have unit available for you, we are only phone support, we dont' know the situation on the repair site" (of course these are in Chinese, maybe some meaning lost in translation, but basically they just can't give you any information about when the unit can be send back)

After 14 days, I finally get my unit back, and what you know, the yellow line still exist on this replacement as well, just not as visible as the last one, as long as the screen is not pure white, you will not notice it.  But i am too tired to phone them back and ask for replacement again, cuz i am without my computer too long and my old laptop is like 8 years ago which is not easy to carry around.  So I will stick to this unit until i can't bear with line anymore or maybe exchange once again before the warrenty expires.  >_<

So if you want to send in for replacement, you better hope that replacment is good or you will end up in endless loop...  And hope MS can have a better QC for the replacement they are sending out.  The replacement need to be FIXED, and not create new problems for customers.
