Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

I'll post a pic tomorrow.  I don't put too much stock in what the online techs say since I've been told three times that the exchange units would be fully working.  At least I didn't receive the previous one I sent back.  It was quite funny to see the best-buy warranty card in the brown box certifying that it was fully checked by a certified Microsoft technician at best buy and under best buy warranty.  My thought is this: someone returns their SP4 for unknown reason but says it works fine.   Certified Microsoft technician resets device and so believes that it is in A1 condition.  Best buy tech puts it in brown box and sends to Microsoft Service Center and MS sends best buy a new retail unit.  MS service center quickly sends POS out as replacement to customer because customer is less important than major retail chain.  Retail chain gets new units to replace in-warranty exchanges, MS direct customer doesn't.  I've been told it is 'impossible' for MS to replace a POS with a new retail one after 30 days.    Just impossible.  In the end I don't care, I just want one that wakes from sleep so I can trust it with my work.  It seems too much to ask.  I hate the constant envy I have of those who have had a > lot 1611 that report never having this issue.

Actually, I suggested a YouTube review so you'd get a wider audience than just this thread. Post a link to the video here.

Search the forum for my other posts about Microsoft's Surface "refurbs" - I even included pictures in one.

I got three "refurbs" in a row that were in such terrible condition they should never have gotten out to any customer.  At least two of them had never been checked in any way, because the flaws were so serious and so obvious they couldn't be missed in even the most cursory inspection.

I truly believe, based on what I've seen as well as other reports here, that there is NO "refurbishment" on returned Surface Pros.  At best, if the screen lights up, it gets wiped to remove fingerprints and shipped out as a replacement for the myriad failed Surfaces out there - that's the extent of the "refurb".

Microsoft's refurb facility is ripping them off, and creating a very valid perception of incredibly poor quality and outright hostility to and disdain for MS customers.  MS Support is lying about refurb quality, and I think they probably know it, but refurbs are all they can offer anyway.

Never accept a Microsoft refurb - I know of no surer losing deal.  (Yes, I know that *really* sucks for those with no access to a Microsoft Store.  FWIW, the Microsoft Stores are awesome, and should be the model for the rest of the entire company.  They actually seem to care about customers.  What a radical concept...)

    Dear Greg,

Unfortunately, this 6/20 update did not solve the no-wake-from-sleep problem in my case (SP4 i5/8GB/256GB; LOT number: 1550). So far, the only ways to prevent this no-wakeup problem are EITHER: 1) Replace "Sleep" by "Hibernate" in all the actions (power button; lid, etc.); OR 2) Go to Device Manager => Pick Universal Serial Bus Controllers => Right click USB Root Hub (xHCI) => Pick "Properties" => Pick "Power Management" tab => Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

This Method 2 was suggested by Mike1098 on May 6 in this forum: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surfpro4-surfdrivers/surface-pro-4-screen-wont-wake-from-sleep/aed66dc7-289a-4300-a167-ab8394b7df06?page=193

For a while (almost two months by now), I have been using Method 2 above with success, which is perhaps more convenient than Method 1. As people discussed around that time, this may not be a true solution though. Since May 6 or so, after each update was released, I checked (with some hope) whether this no-wakeup problem was solved or not by activating (putting the check mark on)  "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" above. But so far, whenever I do this, the no-wake-from-sleep issue immediately reappears. So, I have to uncheck that item again.

    Best regards,

    BVPs

Surface Pro 4 i5/256GB/8GB RAM Model 1548. The 6/20 firmware updates did not work for me. Waited 72 hours after applying them and can now confirm that the problem is not solved.  Back to Method 2.

Thank you BVPs for the thorough explanation.

Here is a video of when I opened my refurb box and found a Best Buy warranty card inside certifying the SP4 as flawless: https://youtu.be/qCDU0Hs-f9k.

Again, this refurbished unit threw an error on first boot-up and then froze.  I had to hard reset twice before I could get into the OS.  Clearly a malfunctioning SP4.  I totally agree that there is no QC on refurb units and this is proof that the asset management company, in this case IQOR, that MS is using to turn their returned assets into working capital is likely hitting the reputation of MS hard.  It is also evident that MS itself takes no responsibility for ensuring customers receive what they paid for - they've handed the entire hardware refurbishment to a third-party.  This also explains why online support finds it 'impossible' to send out new units for those that are not working.  I'm going to put a note in the box when I send it back and see if anyone else actually receives it as a solution to their problem unit.  We should consider posting the serial numbers of non-working refurb's once we have sent them back and see how many times the same POS is sent to someone else.  In fact if MS knows that the serial numbers have been posted I don't think they are allowed to send the unit back to someone else - for security reasons. Perhaps that is a way to get non-functional units out of the supply chain.
