Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

I applied the 12/2 update but the problem persists.  When I tap the power button I can see the back light on the keyboard turn on, but the screen doesn't activate.  I turned it off and on several times.  No change.  My only option is to press and hold the power button and completely shut down.

Updates from 12/2/2015 work well so far.  Haven't gotten a black screen waking from sleep when disconnected from power.  Thanks.

The beta driver ( mentioned in this and other forum posts ) and the new driver released yesterday appear to be the same version. The driver version from the beta: 11/18/2015, 20.19.15.4326 ... driver version from 12/2/2015 update:11/20/2015, 20.19.15.4326. I still had display driver crashes with the beta driver version and it did nothing to address the screen sleep / wake issue. The release driver does seem to have removed the driver crashing issue, however I think it is likely a combination of that and the cumulative update which came with it.

The new driver / cumulative update does nothing to address the screen sleep / wake issue. The only thing I have found to date to overcome that is: (1) leave sleep settings at default and get real good at using the power button and volume up, (2) change the power button to hibernate and just use that instead or (3) shutdown and reboot instead. I personally settled on (2) and I have not had any problems with that. I briefly went back to the normal settings and quickly discovered the issue remains, Windows + P doesn't always work I typically need the two-finger salute.

I seem to get along somehow with these settings in waiting for a real fix instead of these pitiful chewing gum repairs:

If I leave the computer alone in a typical group setting where I must behave silently and discreetly, only the screen saver turns off the screen, and I can get the screen back in a second or two.

During longer sessions where the computer is not needed for a longer period, I either close the lid or push the power button, and hibernating begins, from where the screen returns in 15 seconds.

The advantage of hibernating compared with sleep (irrespective if the sleep state works or not)  is that I avoid taking the computer out of sleep accidentally by touching screen or keys or mouse when closing the lid. I think that almost everybody has made this error, noticing this when the fan is unexpectedly whirring and the computer is hot under the lid. (Someone described just this situation in earlier post).

So the computer shuts down only when I shut it via shut off menu (or exceptionally use force shutting if need be). The energy consumption in hibernating state is so low, that I do not need to think about it because in every case I always plug the computer inside the next 24 hours timeframe anyway.
