Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

Even though I'm not experiencing the inability to wake up my SP4 after the latest windows update (KB3152599), my SP4 won't boot normally. I have to force boot it every time by pressing the on button for around 15 seconds. This started after te latest updates, does anyone else have the same problem? Or even better, a solution.

The replacement came in two days not weeks, and it seems you have weeks to sit here on the Internet and complain but no time to get a replacement? Sometimes you just have to make the best of a hurdle and move on and the solution is so clear like any defective product return it for a working one!

Hi PRP MAN, what's your secret for getting a working one?  I've returned defective SP4s twice , and both times the replacement has the same fail to wake error.  I'll try for number four as soon as the hold for the last return is off my credit card, but you make it sound easy.  How did you do it?

Sorry no secret, I wish I could tell you. I just called told them the troubleshooting I did and they sent a new one. I was unaware that people were getting non working units as replacements, at this point If I were you I would either tell them I wanted a new unit or go to the nearest store if that was possible.

Yes, I thought of that.  Here's my recent chat with the support person who then sent me my second defective replacement:

Me: The nearest MS Store is a 12 hour round trip, so I haven't done that. If you have control over what gets sent out as a replacement, can you ensure that I get sent a brand new one from a recent manufacturing lot?

Microsoft: Yes, I'll note down that this is the second time you are having the same issue and we'll definitely make sure it does not happen again.

Me: So yes I'll get a recent brand new one as a replacement?

Microsoft: Yes it is possible, however I don't have the list of stock inventory, I can request for a brand new unit if available, I will make sure to let them know you are requesting a brand new unit, since this is the 2nd time you are having the same issue on the device.

This is what they're telling me now about how they'd deal with replacement attempt number 3:

Microsoft: Since the issue still persist after the reset via recovery image, I suggest that you process a device replacement for the device. We will add a special note then on the order that this is a multiple device replacement that was already processed with this same issue.

That's right, exactly the same promise. What are the chances that the outcome will be any different this time?  And wouldn't you think that if they had a special pile of SP4s that really work they'd just send them out the first time?

I think it's all totally random.   Microsoft doesn't repair any Surfaces.  If they don't know which units are defective and it can take hours of testing for the no-wake to show up, I suspect that they are just resetting returned units and sending them out again as "refurbished" replacements.  Some people get lucky, but most don't.   As many posters on this thread have already reported.

If I lived in a country that doesn't offer advanced exchange I wouldn't be sending my defective machine off and waiting two weeks without a computer for Microsoft to receive it and send another back when most likely it will have the same no wake issue and may well be in worse condition.
