Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

I still have display driver crash when I attempt to wake up SP4 after I updated to the latest display driver via Windows update today. Good news was the display wake up (instead of showing blank previously) showing display driver stopped working but recovered.

It seems to me every time I close the type cover to put the unit into sleep, I'm able to get display driver crash when trying to wake up... At least 2 times per day. Since then, I disable it and use the power button to the put the unit to sleep. I know in both cases, closing the type cover or pressing the power button does the same thing right? I also noticed the word 'AutoRotate' sign appear on the top left hand corner as the type cover come in contact with the screen. It is suppose to do that?

May be you can try this method and see if there's any more re-occurrence.

I have updated and I do get the message of a driver crash now (didn't get it before!).

There also seems to be an issues if you lose wifi/internet from the time you close and the time you open - I noticed this when I was in the office and switching between access points or to no wifi.

I tested at home and it seemed to be working ok, but then I decided to turn wifi off and it decided it didn't want to wake up.  It finally did after Windows>p several times.

So i've been trying to trouble shoot this issue for a while now.  I'm on my second Surface 4, trying to stay vigilent as we work through the bugs.

It seems if I leave the surface overnight in hibernate mode, it won't come back out of it.  I have to reset it with the power button.  Not sure if the screen isn't returning or the device is actually froze up.

I already eliminated the MS Hello as I heard this was an issue with hanging up.

Does anyone else have issues with the Surface not coming back up after a while?

    <snip>

Update:  After setting hibernation to "Never", the surface is still hanging up requiring a reset by the power button.  This is after sleeping for 2 hours.

I've been fighting with the same issue (power on) for a month now and finally returned my SP4 to the MS store today based primarily on this issue; I'm an IT guy and was going to recommend dozens of these devices for use at a client, but this experience was a killer. It may seem trivial - power on issues - but I can just see my user base going nuts over this.

For a long time it seemed random, but yesterday - the day before returning to store - I decided to try once more to see if I could make sense of the situation at least. I will also add that yesterday, finally, the update "build 10586" was applied, and that included a firmware update ... so I was somewhat optimistic of an improvement. I will also add, I don't use any 'Hello' stuff, and I do have the keyboard attached at all times during all testing.

What I finally observed was - if I leave the device alone for less than an hour or so, it always seems to wake as expected when I touch the power button. But after a longer period (maybe the 120 minute hibernate period), it never seems to come on.  On first press of power, I see a brief 'surface' screen, and the spinning 'wait' wheel, then the screen goes dark - but not totally black/off. It stays in that mode for as long as I'm willing to wait (many seconds).  Then, if I press the power button again, briefly, the screen goes completely dark/off. At that point, if I press power a third time, again briefly, the device comes on as normal.

So for me, at least, it seems like I can get it to wake up by pressing power briefly three times, approx 10 seconds apart. And that's when I discovered this thread, and saw all the horror stories and variants of the problem ... and decided to cut my losses and take back to the store.

I wish I'd read this thread earlier, because I would have liked to explore the 'turn off sleep and use power button to sleep' option, and other ideas found here.

At this point, I guess I'll say good luck to all of you guys as you work through this. Since my main purpose for the surface was to act as a 'remote desktop' device, I'll now try the iPad Pro with the external keyboard - a much cheaper option. Turns out 'Remote Desktop' (the app from the 'store', not the classic 'RDP' client) works beautifully on an iPad and on android devices, better than the same app on the surface for some reason.

It may be fixed. Microsoft released a driver update today. I have installed it and it seems to resolve the problem for me.

The driver crashing  may be fixed, but the wake up from sleep issues isn't. Driving me crazy. Just hard reset, reinstalled everything including cumulative and firmware. Still has the issue. I'm starting to think this "upgrade" from my sp3 was a big mistake.....

Same for me. Installed the new driver (version 20.19.15.4326, dated November 20, 2015) yesterday. Changed lid closing from hibernate to sleep. Closed the lid. Opened the lid four hours later. Wake up function does not work via mouse and keyboard. Power button brings the word "Surface" up for some seconds, then black screen again. Another power button causes some thirty seconds silence, then the desktop at last opens. So, still has the issue.
