Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

OK, I haven't run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit check for updates before (thinking I wanted to be as "pure" with all updates as possible on this SP4, since I tried other Intel drivers and such on my previous one, but they never helped - It was different, but not better.)

Anyway, running it today, it tells me this:

    ![](http://fud.community.services.support.microsoft.com/Fud/FileDownloadHandler.ashx?fid=5aa5c42b-4927-497d-9a0b-1e07ba4aa222)

I haven't let it install these yet, at least partly because what I'm *really* wondering is bunch of other questions driven by this:

If these are really required to make sleep (and other things) work correctly,  then why hasn't Microsoft pushed these out through Windows Update already?

Why didn't they go out with the 4/15 or 4/19 updates?

Why was a completely different, non-standard method chosen to deliver these updates?  (Some kind of half-vast compromise between Windows Update and the Nine Insider Rings of Hades?)

What good is Win Update if it won't find and install what's really needed for my Surface to work?"

It certainly seems that something like a watchdog timer driver is critical, but that makes its omission from the pushed updates even more of a mystery.

I'd love someone at Microsoft to comment on this (yeah, right...), but I do wonder why these two fixes in particular have been withheld from the great masses yearning to be free from the tyranny of Surface fail.  Come to think of it, this situation bears an uncanny resemblance to a (forced re)boot stomping on a Surface Pro Customer's face, forever.*(*The reference is to Orwell's 1984: "But always — do not forget this, Winston — always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face — forever.")

On that note, I have to say that the Surface Pro 4 is still Doubleplusungood, even after the latest round of updates.  (And apparently, even with the two updates above applied as well...)

The 4409 was one of the updates in the group of firmware updates on 4/19.  It is not a new intel beta driver.

i7 16GB 256SSD lot 1704 - The two updates found using the Diagnostic toolkit don't make a difference to the wake from sleep issue.  I installed them using the toolkit on the 21st and still have the wake-from sleep issue.

On my new lot 1604 computer, I have installed everything that I had on my old (returned) computer. The sleep has not given me any problems so far - rock solid for 4 days since I got the new machine.

So the thing that people swore (on Reddit) that made a difference - sfc /scannow and a fix involving DISM - doesn't matter on the new hardware at all. I've used the machine without the fix originally for a couple of days without any sleep issues. Then on a whim, I decided to run it and it had corrupt files that sfc couldn't repair. So I used DISM to repair it and rerun sfc - as for sleep behavior, there was zero difference. For me, I'm believing more and more that the hardware is a big part of the issue.

On my lot 1604, the sleep is exactly as I had expected - no (or very little) battery drain when sleeping, wake up with keyboard or power button, when it reaches hibernate timer, it goes into hibernate. This thing works as advertised.

I'm running Chrome, Edge, skype and steam in the background.

I remember that on the old computer (lot 1550), I tried -

    1. sfc, dism repair, sfc
    2. 2/17 updates, no exclamation on the device manager screen
    3. 4/19 updates, no exclamation on the device manager screen
    4. Complete hardware reset
    5. Intel beta display drivers
    6. Surface toolkit, and updating the watchdog timer
    7. shift-control-win-B
    8. win-P
    9. power button - single tap, double tap, etc.
    10. detach keyboard - reattach keyboard
    11. click on the pen button
    12. plug in a USB mouse
    13. plug in a display port monitor

NONE of them worked. The new machine fixed the sleep problem.

As for people saying on this forum that the new machine isn't necessarily a fix - either they are Microsoft shill or there really is some variation even with the new hardware. I say keep returning the machine until you get one that works - you can be first name basis with the Microsoft Store guys. :-)

As for how extensive my testing is -

    1. setting - Hibernate after 120 minutes
    2. setting - display off after 5 minutes
    3. setting - sleep after 5 minutes
    4. I try waking up the computer 5 minutes after sleep
    5. I try waking up the computer 30 minutes after sleep
    6. I try waking up the computer 60 minutes after sleep
    7. I try waking up the computer 3 hours after sleep (needs to power up since it's hibernated)

So I think I'm giving the sleep function a thorough workout.
