Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

John Lewis exchanged my old i7 S4 without fuss and I now have a Lot 1605. We will see. At least after all the initial updates the fan is working correctly, ublike the otehr device.

I am going to unmark the proposed answer as not being an answer as I'm still seeing pain here in this thread and I don't think the issue has been solved.  My apologies to Josh_F but I'd rather be honest here.

I'll be flat out honest, I don't like hibernating computers.  Part of this is that I come from a forensic background and a turned off computer means there is less volatile stuff in memory, there have been past articles about forensic examinations of the hibernation file allowing you to gain more access into an encrypted drive and just enough stuff to make me just plain more comfortable with turning off a mobile laptop.  Not to mention, it doesn't take that long to boot.  So for me personally I'd just recommend that shut down be used just because I'm paranoid and machines boot fast.  This is also not an answer to your problem, just merely a comment.

Can someone check their last installed updates and post the most recent ones here?  I got this replacement unit (which hasn't had any wake issues in a week). I just  noticed that I'm unable to install any insider builds, and now that I'm looking,  I haven't had ANY updates installed since the day I received it.  So maybe it's an update that's causing the issue.

Causing it? Maybe, maybe not. With my surface, from day 1, every time I install a new firmware, driver, or even Windows OS update I start getting the random crashes, reboots, etc. for weeks. I then spend countless hours uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, disabling and reenabling startup programs, and making sacrifices to some dark and ancient god until the surface (mostly) works properly again. Then a big patch Tuesday rolls around, and I'm back to square one.

The symptom is that the system (presumably the Explorer.exe process that runs the shell) becomes either partially or completely unresponsive to most user input:  Right-swipe to launch Activity Center (and get to all settings, etc.) stops working; You can't type at Cortana in the "Ask Me Anything" box, and the Windows Button itself becomes unresponsive.   In the past, I've seen that all "Modern" Windows apps stop working - I don't know if that happened yesterday, because I try to never use Windows (Store) apps anymore, only Desktop programs, as the apps seem to significantly destabilize the system. (not to mention that most apps are lobotomized in the first place.  OneNote is the only app I normally use, but I had the desktop (OneNote 2016) version opened when this happened again yesterday.)

Interestingly, the Start button is completely unresponsive EXCEPT when you right-click on it, where you can at least still get to the menu to shut down and restart.  (I think this may be evidence of one of the seams showing in Win10: That part, which is there to provide access to the "old way" of doing a lot of Sys Admin functions, is still actually running in Desktop mode, not as a Modern app...)....

Are you using Chrome to browse?  I have noticed that Chrome tends to introduce little freezes to the system, including the start button, taskbar ect.  In fact sometimes I have to exit chrome to get the system moving again.  I've found notifications not popping up as well.  I only just installed chrome to try out the new .50 version and immediately noticed all the unresponsive behavior.  

I don't get these problems with firefox.
