Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

    Dear Microsoft:

If this is a software issue then patch it. If this is a hardware problem then issue a recall. Rejecting reviews, total silence, and ignoring us is going a long way towards running off customers permanently.

    Not so kind regards anymore,

    Everyone!

p.s. Even I'm looking at shiny Apple products these days. Good grief!

I finally had enough and had some time to try and tackle this:

    • I went to the Microsoft Store on a Friday and explained the problem. They claimed for this not be a very common problem, not unheard of, but not common. They were "very confident" a wipe and restore from their "special" packages would fix the problem. I tried to probe here a bit, and my conclusion was they don't have anything special at all that can't be downloaded by a consumer. After a few tests in the store with no wake issues, I went home.
    • That evening, I had the first #nowake problem. The next day, I had another. Far less frequency than before, but still there. I went back on Sunday and they gave me a new one.
    • New Surface Pro 4:
      • The great news - not a single #nowake for a week now.
      • The bad news - this one has some light bleed, but really only noticeable on the Surface boot screen. My first SP4 had none.
      • None of the following: heat issues, excessive fan, coming on by itself, sleep battery drain.

As we've all felt, it's a great device when it works. It's been great going into meetings knowing I can rely on it to quickly take notes.

I'd suggest folks keep swapping out until you get one that works. Much easier if you have a store around you.

Weird, had the EXACT same experience, except I got one sent to me. They were out of "replacement units" at my local store. But yeah, my replacement sp4 hasn't had a single no wake issue in almost 2 weeks, but ALSO has light bleed at the bottom center of the screen. Only when the Surface Logo is up when booting. Ill take lightbleed over not waking any day. Maybe it is a hardware issue after all. I just put Build 14316 insider preview on there, and have yet to have a single issue. My heart dropped yesterday after installing the preview build, and it said I had to restart for the 2-17 update(which was already on there). But have restarted a few times and all is well.

As it turns out, a few months ago, I finally gave up on Windows Phone and switched to you-know-what.  While it still smarts a little to say it (why, I don't know), they're SO far ahead it's not even funny.  I actually enjoy using a smartphone now.  You know, without having to bookmark forums that I visit every single day to check if a basic problem has been fixed.

Interestingly the Store just published this one.

Great PC if it worked properly
I am on my second SP4. It would be a great device if its waking from sleep problem was fixed. See "Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep" thread on the MS Community. Microsoft seems to be ignoring this widespread issue. Definitely not recommended<br> unless this problem is fixed.

I have set my second SP4 to hibernate and never sleep and it has been working 100 % since then. For my use the slightly longer delay is acceptable although I wish MS would fix the sleep problem so that I could use it like any other tablet.

Just reading the mail and from my own experience there seem to be two cases of not waking from sleep. The first leaves the machine clearly running but not displaying when awoken. This probably equates to the battery drain problem as well. That was the problem I had on my first SP4 bought on 2/1/16. I exchanged it at a local store because I could still demonstrate the second kind of awake problem where the OS has simply crashed and has to be rebooted with the power button hold down even after the 2/17 firmware update.  My replacement worked Ok for a few days but then reverted to the second kind of awake failure following a printer driver load. I have not retested it recently as it never sleeps now. I just close the type cover and it hibernates. I tap the power button to reawaken it after the type cover is opened.
