Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

    How in the world is this problem not fixed yet?  Very disappointing to have a ~$1300 paperweight that can't reliably be used for anything important without risking data loss.  I attempt to use my Surface Pro throughout the day and experience the black screen issue multiple times PER DAY.  It usually happens when closing the type cover or when the computer goes to sleep from inactivity.  I typically have to hold the power and volume buttons to reset the system and lose whatever I was working on.

    The worst part is, that it isn't the only issue with the SP4.  I also run into other sleep/hibernate bugs.  For example, I will left the Surface charge overnight while it's in sleep mode.  In the morning, I'll unplug it and hear notifications start to sound off, as unplugging it apparently wakes it up, even though I haven't even opened the cover.  Every once in a while, it refuses to go back to sleep after this and I take it out of my carrying case at work to find a piping hot Surface with a dead battery.  Totally unacceptable reliability for something so expensive.  Microsoft should be absolutely ashamed and embarassed.

    Hi Josh,

    My surface pro 4 has been presenting with this same fault since the day I bought it (a month ago) and I had all updates installed from the first day, today I confirmed the updates you recommended had been installed correctly, and they have been. So I am still getting this same fault occurring regularly. At first I thought it would only happen when I shut the keyboard/cover instead of pressing the sleep button, but this has just proven to not be the case.

    I also Have the same issue & am waiting for microsoft to fix this mess.Didnt have this problem till after the last update. Currently I am running my surface pro 4 in hibernation mode. I cant risk losing my work. I got tired of constantly having to reboot the damned thing.

    I understand your frustration. I am very disappointed with Windows 10 and Surface Pro 4. They're suppose to be deeply integrated and well compatible since both hardware and software design comes from Microsoft. 

    This is one bug, and there're so many more!

    such as:

      • Device overheating and draining the battery when asleep.
      • Screen not turning on when waking up from sleep
      • Display driver crashing (still happens to me at least once a week)
      • Device hangs completely, forcing me to hold the power button for 30 seconds to force a reboot. Happens at least once a week.
    5. Why would Microsoft make two versions of One Note??? One comes with Windows 10 lacking most pro users feature, and One Note 2016 from Office suit doesn't even compatible with the pen.

    I hope Microsoft can truly care for their customers and focus on making solid software for its hardware.
