Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

I am having the Sleep of Death problem, although it is infrequent.  How can I determine the lot number of my machine w/o having the original box?  I want to go into my local MS store and see if an exchange is possible.

Well, Lot 1611 was made the 11th week of 2016, so if you bought your SP4 before that, yours is older. If you bought it after, then it's hard to say. I got my lot 1613 SP4 from the MS store on the 20th of May. So, at a big guess, I'm guessing lot 1611 started showing up at stores around May 1, give or take?

Second reply to this. I had to be polite, but extremely insistent to get the store tech to give me a new one in exchange, and then only after the refurb they gave me did the sleep of death within hours. They also insisted the "replacement unit" in a plain cardboard box was actually a brand new unit. I do not believe that those units are anything other than refurbs, but that is my opinion. (And that of a MS employee who shall remain nameless.) A new one comes in a box just like you were buying a new one, in my opinion.

Thanks, MikeKirnak.  That's great to know.

There's one hole though.  Do you know for sure that the send downloaded Windows image that did not fail on the 16xx platform was the same image that did fail on the earlier two 15xx platforms?  As you know, Microsoft updates the download image every few weeks.

If not, do you if someone else here has?  I'd like to find a clear demonstration that the exact same image performed differently on two platforms.  That's what's needed to erase doubt about the veracity of Microsoft's implicit claim that there is no change in the hardware.

Also, having read more of this thread than I have, what's your belief on when the unacknowledged hardware change occurred?

One thumb drive, same downloaded image on all three machines. I did not re-download. What's funny is that I tried to download a new image for the new machine, but was unable too. I had to contact MS about that, and they shipped me a thumb drive with a new image, since for some reason it was not possible to download an image from MS at that time. it didn't arrive till the 27th of May. Anyways, I was forced to use the image I had loaded on the other two machines. That image has been running great since May 21.

I still find really interesting that my backup image loaded up just fine on the SP4 I bought on Nov18, and it loaded up just fine on the refurb I got. But no matter how many times I tried, it would not load on the lot 1613 SP4. The MS image I had--that I downloaded sometime the week before--loaded just fine on all three machines. I can't help but believe that there was something in the hardware different enough to prevent the backup loading on the new machine.

Like I said, I don't know that there is any difference for sure after lot 1611. It could be that my first three SP4s were defective and I finally got a good one. But I have no doubt that the first three had flawed hardware for whatever reason. Also, I have not seen on this thread anyone complaining about lot 1611 or later. Just anecdotal evidence for sure, but certainly compelling enough to warrant investigation. And I'm glad I remained stubborn about getting a new SP4. MS clearly hasn't been able to fix the problem with the older SP4s at least. A refurb is almost certainly going to have issues.
