Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

    I received my 1609 unit 2 weeks ago. 3 days after receiving it, I started to get the Sleep of Death issue. After some research on the web, I found that many people had corrupted system files from the get go. I ran SFC on the Surface and proceeded to fix all issues using DSIM.

    It was not enough, so I then proceeded to reset my Surface. Problem is still there, happening multiple times a day,

    requiring a reboot every time. Very frustrating.

    I proceeded to disable any power saving option, which is not great for a mobile device.

    I'm using the Surface Dock (newer version) with the latest firmware.

    FWIW, mine is lot 1604 and I definitely still have the problem - it wedged hard twice yesterday. 

    See previous posts for an outline of my experiences with "refurbished" Surface Pros sent out by the Service group - let's just say that in my considerable experience (spent over two months to get three completely unacceptable refurbs in a row, losing a day or two to rebuild everything each time), Microsoft is utterly failing on the "qwality" of refurbished Surface Pro 3s and 4s - apparently, if it lights up at all, they ship it.

    1st refurb - Hardware problems that kept entire OS from functioning properly.  Extremely unstable (blue/black screens).  Restore/Reset did not help.

    2nd refurb - Looked like it had been through a war - scratched, scuffed, kickstand was bent and broken and would not open past about 90 degrees.

    3rd refurb - Fired it up and it instantly made a chainsaw-like sound - the fan (which ran all the time) was hitting something inside.  People literally came from across the house to see what the noise was...

    Your chances of getting your old SP4 to wake and work correctly are *way* better than getting a quality refurb.  It's really hard to overstate how bad the Surface refurbs are...

    Reading this thread--and my own experience--seems to indicate that the potential for problems is quite high for lot 1610 and earlier, and lot 1611 and later seem to be much better. That lot number could be off a week or two. My lot 1613 SP4 not only wakes perfectly--my three earlier SP4s were horrible--it also performs better and has much, much, better battery life. If you are having issues, please post your lot number, found only on the original box.

    For sure there was some sort of a hardware modification in 2016. Which week, I'm not sure.

    Many have stated that lot 1611 may be the cut-off point - I had my 1550 unit replaced by a 1604 unit and had absolutely no problem with the new unit - I tell my wife how I actually LOVE this device and never had loved a device before as much as I love this device (now that the sleeping issue isn't there) - this is a lot coming from a Linux guy.

    So I put my vote in for the hardware change at least before 1604 based on my personal experience.

    For those who's getting much better battery life - I guess is that it seems that way because the sleep function is actually working correctly?

    I'm also noticing that a number people who's exchanged their device at the Microsoft store is no longer visiting this thread - so advice for all of you that still has the sleep problem - run to your closest Microsoft store and tell them you are not leaving the store without a lot 16xx or later machine. Visit google map to figure out when there are going to be the most number of people in the store - be ready to be insistent and be heard.

    It's a hardware issue easily fixed by replacing the device (sending broken and receiving a new one).

    (3 working days in Europe)

    Don't waste your time playing with drivers/settings -- just send it and get a new one.

    Just do it :) 

     

    My SP4 (15XX) has the same problem (wake -> crash)

    I purchased this device in china and MS only argeed to repair my device, I had to give the device to MS for factory repair.

    This week I received my repaired device, I can draw the following conclusions：

    1.  It's a hardware issue

    After the repair, my device doesn't appear the "wake->crash" problem2.  Repair will cause damage to your device

    After the repair, my device was obviously bent and on the screen i found two significant light leak (not on the edge)

    I don't know how MS does it, but I can't accept such results, it's unfair to me.
