Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

That's awesome if the magic number is one hour, I hadn't seen any reference to one hour. It'd be great if that's the case.

With the holidays, days and evenings haven't been dedicated to this problem but I needed to find a solution that at least was a reasonable work around. I started with ridiculously short sleep and hibernate after times (1 minute for each) just because I wanted to find something that worked for me and the SP4s we have deployed in our company. (Our president was one of the people with a new SP4 and I had to find a workable solution ASAP.) I have not had time to work up the clock to longer times yet be will continue to test.

Hopefully Microsoft will come up with a fix soon now that the holidays are mostly behind us. Until then I will continue to extend the time windows of both sleep and hibernate after to see what the maximum is.

For the record, I have not had one black screen event since using the times I've posted on the forum - which is great! Unfortunately, Maps doesn't have roads. For me this isn't a big deal for now since there are many other options that seem to be working.

I know Microsoft has taken a bit of heat for this issue, and rightfully so, but no product would ever make it out the door with NO problems still to be worked out or even fully discovered. There's a lot of new stuff in the SP4, they'll getting working without major issues. For me, I love the SP4 and I'll love it all the more as the last remaining big issues get ironed out. I can, and so can our users (so far) live with the apparent easy work around for the black screen issue.

I updated to the Dec display driver and it fixed the start-up/waking from sleep black screen issue. Also fixed roads on Maps issue. Microsoft just pushed another update last night and my display drivers have gone back to the older ones with all problems reoccurring. :(  I guess I'll just reinstall the Dec ones again. I hope they push the Dec drivers soon.

UPDATE: 2 days in now and the black screen issue has occurred once only (2 days ago). I left the display drivers at 20.19.15.4326 (what Microsoft last pushed). This is a massive improvement. Maps still have no roads.

    Just to be clearer.

    • Having issues as per thread.
    • Updated manually to latest intel graphics driver (Dec .4352). No more issues (black screen on start and roads on Maps fixed).
    • Microsoft pushed update on 3rd Jan. This changed the graphics drivers back to .4326. This update included a "system hardware update 17/12/15", "Surface Display", "Intel Corporation - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3, Graphics Adapter WDDM2.0 - Intel(R) HD Graphics 520".
    • Black screen issue occurred once only since (no issue in last 2 days). The roads on Maps are not working again.

Perhaps part of their last update addressed the issue (despite the graphics driver being rolled back to .4326).

I'm getting a bit confused with two different "solutions." The current display driver 20.19.15.4326...is that a new one?  Is that the "fix"?

If not, and I have not challenged it yet, I have the following settings working just fine.  But I disagree with Loren about Hibernate.  My experience and I thought I read this too, is that Sleep works fine until 1 hour.  So I have my settings as he does, except I leave it on Sleep for up to an hour (maybe a few minutes less) , and then Hibernate. That has worked just fine.  The only difference I have for battery is screen off sooner.

That said, I don't like using hibernate, as I think sleep wakes faster and is less hard drive intensive.  So, I would like a fix!

v20.19.15.4352 is the driver available from Intel which is installed manually.  After installing it I reset my power options back to default, and I haven't had to do a hard reset since.

The "hard drive" is solid state (SSD), memory chips, not spinning disks.  Waking up from sleep is faster than waking from hibernation, because less data is being moved around, but waking from hibernation is quite fast with SSD.
