Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

CtrlAltDelete does not fix the black screen issue. What you describe is having slideshow turned on for lock screen, system goes to sleep while plugged in. With this CtrlAltDel does work "everytime." Unfortunately, pressing CtrlAltDel does not fix the black screen issue coming out of hibernate.

My associate has done extensive testing with all the new features of Windows 8 and 10 as it relates to the new screen saver, slideshow and spotlight settings for settings/personalization/lock screen non-domain and domain joined computers with various group policy settings. CtrlAltDel does bring back the ability to fully interact with the computer and fully displaying everything. Without CtrlAltDel you can still see mouse movement but nothing else, only CtrlAltDel would bring back the screen (and ability to fully interact with the computer).

Starting with 4th generation devices, like Surface Pro 3 (Haswell era) there is a new CPU state that has never existed on Intel based computing system - at one time called connected standby - much like a cell phone with the screen off but not powered down. It's a low power state that still kept network alive and cpu still on but in a minimal way. Think of it as mostly off but not totally off.

My hunch is that there's some bugs in the new 6th generation Intel chipset, cpu an/or gpu. I'd be really curious if other hardware with 6th gen. Intel hardware has similar issues coming out of hibernation. Unfortunately we only over see about 220 PCs and don't have any other 6th Gen. devices to test/use yet.

For those without a keyboard, you can do CtrlAltDel without a keyboard - simultaneously press and release power and volume up, that triggers CtrlAltDel.

I have had the same problem with my surface pro4 numerous times since I purchased it 2 months ago. the last time it took a day to get it to turn on, lucky I have my trusty sony with me as I am in a remote location for one month at a time. I contacted (chatted) with Microsoft support and opted to go with the replacement which I was told would take 3-5 business. After 5 chats and 3 phone calls and nothing but lip service saying it's on it's way, still no replacement. I finally got an email today saying it's been shipped, 27 days later. Now problem is I'm not home for at least 2 weeks and may not be able to return defective laptop on time.  The Microsoft service I received is terrible.

I also was thinking of getting the Lumina 950 but now convinced not to.

Just tried it with my SP4 in the SP3 docking station to a monitor connected via DVI. No problems.

Somewhere buried in this thread was a comment that the NEW driver did not work properly with the docking station and another monitor attached.  Can anyone confirm that, or the opposite? Is the new driver working fine with docking and use of another large desktop monitor?

If it works fine, great, and thanks. If not, then that could be the reason MSFT is not releasing it yet in updates.

I'll check this. I have a SP3 docking station at home. As I recall, I have no issues with external monitors directly connected to the SP4 OR through the SP3 docking station with the new drivers, but I will double check.

I have an SP3 - that said the issue is pretty much the same as you folks with the SP4 - goes to sleep, wakes up but screen is black, ctrl-alt-del wakes it up properly if teh keyboard is attached, etc etc.  In addition when docked it would sometimes totally lose its marbles as far as the external display requiring the volume-power "fix".

So I installed the latest drivers for this machine per instructions, I also modified the power plan according to the excellent tip about hidden settings and set to hibernate after sleep.

All the changes seem to work beautifully so far.  It wakes up as it should, the dock hasn't lost its mind on the external display yet.  In fact, I unplugged it hot, ran in tablet mode, let it sleep, plugged it back in to the dock to wake it up and it worked flawlessly.  I still think MS needs to address this issue "officially" but I can't express my gratitude enough for you folks helpful tips!
