Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

    Hi,

It might be a good idea to install the driver pack as well:

Don't put Surface Pro 4 in sleep mode.  Make sure you shut down before you close the keyboard cover.  If you close the keyboard on the display while the computer is on it will go into sleep mode.  I had luck one time getting out of sleep mode without holding down power and volume buttons but that was only once.  I think this is unacceptable but I can only hope for a software fix from Microsoft.  In the mean time I plan to shut down my PC before I close the cover.

This board has been relatively quiet since the newest update.  One person found it solved the wake up problem, another reports it continues. Does the relative quiet mean it is resolved?  Or has everyone just  returned their SP4 and given up?  Has anyone else noticed any changes?

Well after getting excited that the new update had fixed it for me I had a "black screen of death" (there, now I've named it it is a thing!). This was a more complicated situation and I think it was something like: after hibernating undocked I docked (plus external HDMI monitor) and then pressed power. The display lit up but I left it and when I tried later neither Ctr-Alt-Del or power would wake it up. It appeared to be completely non responsive. Hade to do the usual long power button shutdown and restart.

It occurs to me that something that makes this issue worse is there is no indication of the sate the device is in. There are several modes all presenting as a black-screen-of-death, possibly with keyboard backlight on). Manufactures often provide LEDS to indicate state, though they are not really accessible to all.

There are a wide range of symptoms, including none, an intermittent nature and the fact a (probably) unrelated update seems to have (largely) fixed it in at least my case. This all reinforces my theory that this is a race condition (or race conditions) between hardware and software during wake up. The worse sort of problem to reproduce and fix but the stats are coming in.

For those who still complain about the problem causing lost work, use one of these current solutions mentioned on this thread:

    1. Use hibernate, not Sleep, or use sleep for less than 1 hour
    2. Get the new driver

A small 'nit' - neither are solutions - just temporary hacks / workarounds. While they appear to work for some we need Microsoft to finds a solution that works for everyone.

All together now..."Come on Microsoft, get yer finger out! and fix this one"
