Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

Hi Andrew, we published an update on 6/20 that improves system stability when the device resumes operation from sleep or hibernation.

To check for updates now, go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

After you restart your Surface, confirm the updates are installed. Go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and then select Advanced options > View your update history.

Hey guys, there's an interesting thing happened just now:

1. My sf4p is connecting an external monitor these days and
2. I left it hibernate last night, with the monitor connecting, also the type cover closed (to protect type cover from dusting).
3. I then wake up the sf4p by pressing the power button, with type cover closed
4. I login to windows by entering the PIN code (since IR camera is covered)
5. Just right after logged into windows, I check the project status from the notification center, and it says the current setting is "This PC screen only", but what is happening is, (I then open the type cover and see) the screen of sf4p is black out, and my external monitor is showing the desktop:


What an interesting thing, it was not Sleeping, but Hibernating, the display driver (or hardware?) seems

just outputting the signal to external socket whatever the setting in Windows is.

BTW, It's in China here and I talked to the support, by the policy here they won't let me to have the current one returned and give me a new one. It seems MS knows the issue and their answer is just let me be patient and says that it will be fixed by the coming windows updates...

After months of dealing with this on a lot 1611 15xx unit, I went in and demonstrated the issue to the Microsoft Answer desk. The tech there said that next week there should be another update that will fix the problem, but given their track record for releasing fixes that actually work, I'm not too hopeful.

My specific failure modes were:

1. If I hibernated or shut down with the keyboard attached, it would not actually hibernate or shut down. It would get stuck, powered on, but no screen, and I would have to do the two-button reset.
2. Waking from sleep was unreliable, especially with the keyboard attached.
3. The Hibernate work-around USED to work before the latest insider release of Windows 10

In any case, they swapped me for a brand new 1617 unit (i7/8GB/256GB), and all is well.

Here's an interesting thing though--

When I tried resetting my old 1611 15xx unit, I could not. Had errors. MS Tech said there was something definitely wrong with that unit and left it at that.

I restored an image of my old 1611 15xx unit to this new 1617 unit (in hopes of saving some time in reinstalling and reconfiguring) and the problems returned immediately. When I did a complete reset using a system restore disk created from the fresh new unit, I had no more issues.

What does this mean?

There is no clear answer.

There is definitely a hardware issue.

There can be software problems solved by a wipe and reset.

There can be a combination of the two.

Sigh.
