Its not a proper fix but if you switch the power saving settings from sleep to hibernate the display issue seems to go away, it also resolve the issue of the surface remaining on when you close the lid and put it in a bag, potentially over heating or draining
the battery without you knowing.
Click on the battery in the taskbar -> Click on "Power & Sleep Settings"(this brings up the power and sleep settings in the system settings menu)
Click on "Additional Power Settings" under "Related Settings" in the right hand pane of "Power and Sleep" in the system settings pane (which loads a new window showing the power options control panel )
Click on the "choose what the power buttons do" on the left pane and
**change everything from "sleep" to "hibernate" on the pane "on battery" and "on plugged in"**and click
"save Changes"
This should resolve the issue as a temporary fix while MS fix the sleep function which is likely a intel graphics driver issue, but it will take longer to boot each time and you'll get the surface logo each time as if the device is switched off completely
which it is (hibernation mode is a complete power off but preserves the system state so your open apps will reopen as they were) .
Note: "closing the lid" is the same action as closing the type cover.
The trade off is that it takes a bit longer to wake but the response is consistent around the display, and it doesn't fix the underlying sleep display issue but it does seem to work.
The sleep display issue was driving me mad. MS still need to fix it, it would also be great if I could still listen to spotify like I can on an iPad in sleep mode.. and add the additional characters missing on the soft keyboard in split mode, and the rotation
issue when you use the dock, and scaling apps (why does everything in office work except lync? with scaling) and a whole bunch of other minor but very irritating issues that lead to an overall poor user experience.
Hope this helps others anyway.
Dan.
