Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

With all due respect for both Barb and Greg I have unmarked this as an answer.  Let's let this update "bake" for a few days and really make sure it's a fix, shall we?

There are a LOT of very very patient people in this thread and Microsoft can be just a teensy bit more patient before marking this as answered.

Well I can confirm that the newest firmware updates 6/21 have not solved the problem on my SP4.  They installed but that is not an answer since the problem persists on my unit.  This thread is therefore not answered.  Still not waking from sleep, black screen, keyboard lights up and only a hard-reboot works.  I am so very upset.  I have a replacement unit that the MS tech guaranteed wouldn't' have this issue.  I am not happy MS.

First, try a two button restart:

Step 1: Press and hold the power button on your Surface for 30 seconds.

Step 2: After Surface turns off, press and hold volume-up button and the power button on your Surface at the same time for at least 15 seconds, and then release both.

The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds.

Step 3: After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds.

Step 4: Press and release the power button again to turn your Surface back on.

Next, after your Surface turns back on, check for Windows Updates:

Step 1: Go to Start and select Settings > Update & security > Windows Update.

**Step 2:**Select Check for updates. Install any available updates.

**Step 3:**If prompted, select Restart now.

For details on Surface updates, please check the Surface update history page.

Really? This is marked as answering this thread? I mean, yes it get's the SP4 started again, but corrupted files are inevitable if this technique is used often. Marking this as the answer to this thread is another slap in the face to MS customers.

Perhaps yesterday's update will help the vast numbers of SP4s that have this problem, I don't know. If it does, that would be the answer. But it is certainly too early to tell. The Feb 17 update was supposed to fix everything too; it did not. At this point, the answer to this thread is to return the defective SP4 for a new retail SP4--not a refurb. That is the ONLY solution that as yet has been shown to fix the problem.

I have a new SP4, and am very happy with it. It wakes from sleep and hibernation each and every time. My first three were garbage.

If there is ANY integrity here at all, un-mark the above post as the answer to this thread. All you are doing is further angering hosts of unhappy customers.

Thanks, Greg.  I have a suggestion for the future.  It's great to know that Microsoft believes it has solved the problem.  But in situations like this in the future, it would be really helpful to users to know Microsoft is aware of an unsolved problem, is working on it, and maybe even some explanation of why the solution is not immediately forthcoming.  You can see from the history of this thread that lots of man-hours were wasted by users and Microsoft, and Microsoft suffered a significant unnecessary expense replacing hardware for a problem with a pending software fix.
