Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

    try a two button restart

Step 1: Press and hold the power button on your Surface for 30 seconds.

Step 2: After Surface turns off, press and hold volume-up button and the power button on your Surface at the same time for at least 15 seconds, and then release both.

The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds.

Step 3: After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds.

Step 4: Press and release the power button again to turn your Surface back on.

A 30 SECOND SHUTDOWN IS NOT AN ANSWER AND SHOULD NOT BE MARKED AS SUCH!!!

The 30 second shutdown is a FORCE SHUTDOWN. Something that Microsoft DOES NOT WANT you to do during an update or does not recommend you doing at any time. I still regularly have this problem with a $2,000 Surface Pro 4 on Feb 8, 2016.

Last week because of these force shutdowns all communications apps stopped working. I could not use Mail, People, Calendar, and more. After all the work to try and restore those apps, I had to do a reset (reinstall keeping files) on my device and spend hours reinstalling all the Windows Store Apps (even thought they were not supposed to be removed) and all my desktop programs. I BLAME THIS SQUARLY ON THE FACT THAT I NEED TO USE FORCE SHUTDOWN EVERYTIME I CANNOT WAKE IT UP!

Since the Surface actually wakes up without the screen/display driver not responding, I made some changes this week after I was forced to recover my device. I created two shortcuts on the desktop so I could use a keyboard command to SAFELY shutdown or restart the Surface. Far more effective than holding a button for 30 seconds.

Commands for each and the keyboard commands I assigned:

    CTRL + ALT + R:

    %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /r /t 0

    CTRL + ALT + S:

    %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0

Create the shortcut and then set your shortcut key by going to Properties > Shortcut.

I use Windows Hello so the device does recognize me as I can tell by the red light and the keyboard that stays lighted. I also noticed I can still interact with Cortana, to bad Cortana does not have a shutdown or restart voice command.

Still patiently waiting for a REAL fix. I have less than 30 days until I will return this Surface to Costco. I expect that will be the case as it does not seem that Microsoft will acknowledge that this is a real problem.

And you expect me to do this every time it goes to sleep?!? This better get addressed soon or this thing is going back.

Send it back, wait for MS to release a fix, use this forum to confirm that the fix actually fixes the problem, and (if you so choose) buy a new one. If stores start facing increased returns, maybe they'll put the hurt on MS to start taking this problem a little more seriously. Even if not, there's no way you should be putting up your hard earned cash and running down your 1-year warranty for a computer that doesn't work for you. It's time to vote with your feet.

The sleep problem is definitely *not* just a closing keyboard issue. It has same issues when you hit power button (that's not just for me, many posters have the same issue regardless of 'how' it gets to sleep).

I do also have the problem where it gets warm when it's supposedly sleeping. Unfortunately, I have not seen a solution for that one.
