Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

Hi Dub.  I sympathize.  The 6/20/16 updates did not solve the problem.  And I agree that nothing in this long thread of anecdotes convinces me that the problem is in the hardware or that swapping machines will solve it.  The fact that no one has demonstrated that the same system image behaves differently on different Surfaces (something that would take only a few hours to confirm) should cast doubt on all these anecdotes.  

I'm sure Microsoft must be trying to solve this problem.  I can only hope it's a priority.  It's certainly a priority for me.

And for reasons that go beyond just waking up from sleep.  While the failure to wake is an apt caption for this problem, the problem involves more severe consequences for me.   When sleep doesn't work properly, it means you cannot count on having battery power when you need it.  It's inconvenient to spend a minute or two doing a hard reset and reloading programs then correcting any file corruption.  But It's utterly hopeless to not have any battery power when there's no auxiliary power and you need your Surface to work.   If sleep doesn't work, there's no guarantee you'll have any battery power remaining when you try to wake the Surface.

It's worth noting that we still do not know that there even ARE improved or known working Intel chip steppings/revisions - the reports of working, newer SP4s are strictly anecdotal, and some of those have developed wake problems weeks later.  I would feel better about trying a hardware swap if we actually knew, for sure, and based on data, that there truly is a known good working, robust SP4 configuration, beyond a couple of "so far, so good" reports...

Hi Dub.  I have identified with the struggles you've described in your posts here - between January and May I had my SP4 replaced twice in failed attempts to fix the sleep of death issue.  The two replacements were refurbs sent by Microsoft online support.  None of those machines would go for more than a day or two without a failure to wake from sleep.  Like you, I was pretty sure that all SP4s had the sleep of death.

Then a month ago my travels took me near a physical Microsoft store.  They were happy to replace my third non-waking SP4 with a brand new sealed-in-the-box unit from lot 1615.  I've been running that one every day now for five weeks, and not a single failure to wake episode yet.  This unit is definitely different from the previous three I had.  It is everything that I hoped the SP4 would be when I first bought it.

I know that's just another anecdote.   But if Microsoft has made changes in recent lot numbers that fix the sleep of death, hopefully they will start sending out those units as replacements for the defective older machines instead of the "refurbs" that just get sent right back to them and then we'll have some real data.

Improved but STILL NOT FIXED!

Prior to this update my SP4 would not wake nearly 100% of the time (unless USB power saving was disabled). The 6/20 update has so far been an improvement and I had no issues for nearly two days. However, I just had to do a hard reset as it would not wake again.
