OK, my machine is about as clean as it can be, as it was swapped (again) for another unit after even the Microsoft Store gave up after a vain two-day attempt to fix the power-management-induced corruption of Win 10 on my SP4. (BTW, this failure mode was
really weird - after failing to wake up and having to force a shutdown and restart, I lost all ability to run all "Modern" apps (including the Windows menu and Activity Center, which makes it impossible to even try to fix some things.) After all kinds of
things starting with wsreset, sfc and dism incantations, and moving to in-place upgrade, profile copy/rename/reload, etc., most worked, but it still refused to run the Windows store and a few other Modern apps (photos, etc.))
So, as a replacement, this is a *perfectly* clean machine, all updates freshly applied, including the 2/17/2015 Power Management Firmware update, and a couple of reboots last night and today, so the upgrade should be fully complete.
First, the good news - the fan has hardly run at all - this firmware update is a huge improvement in that department. It's quite a bit harder to even provoke the fan to run, and it certainly seems to be considerably less likely to run the fan because of
video loads - the fan has been silent now through things that would have unfailingly had it running before.
The bad news, though, is that sleep/wake/resume is still not working as it should - at least for me. Keep in mind that this machine is almost virgin, with only a portion of my files restored yet, and (other than the Windows apps), only one program re-installed
so far: Firefox.
Once, the machine went to sleep while docked - it shouldn't as I told it to never sleep when plugged in so that I could restore my documents last night. (This SP4 seems to have even more issues maintaining a dock connection in my SP3 dock than the one I
had before.)
It has failed to properly wake twice today when put to sleep after undocking: (Undock, snap on keyboard cover, close keyboard cover (now a new SP4 keyboard cover to avoid potential problems with the SP3 version), then carry off to meeting).
The first time, opening the keyboard cover did not wake the SP4, and it could not be wakened with a short press of the power button, either - I had to hold for the timeout and restart - not a good first experience.
The second time, I undocked and carried the computer to another appointment, and this time also, opening the keyboard cover did not wake the machine. I was able to reboot (NOT wake) it by a normal press of the power button, and of course, my previous session
and apps state was all gone.
For a machine that's supposed to be usable as a tablet, this is inexcusable - being effectively forced to reboot every single time you wake the machine makes it pretty darn useless. Apple's iOS and Google's Android have lots of flaws, but they almost unfailingly
wake up quickly and reliably on demand, and we expect that in our Surface tablets as well.
I'll play around to see if it's just a bug with the keyboard cover, or if this happens in other circumstances as well, but one thing's clear about the 2/17/2015 firmware update: Some things are really improved, but there are still some really ugly power
management demons yet to be exorcised.
Thanks for the work guys, but it looks like you're quite not done yet...
