Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

I just got my SP4 a week ago, and occasionally it would have trouble waking from sleep. Now, after the update, it seems that I have to hard reset every time my SP4 sleeps for longer than about half an hour. This is completely unusable for any situation and I am hugely disappointed.

For a machine in this price point the SP4 shouldn't have issues just sleeping and waking, something even budget tablets/computers do without problems. Please fix, Microsoft. So far this purchase has been a disaster.

    Hi All,

We released an update on 2/17/2016 that addresses this issue.

We recommend that you install this update to keep your Surface performing its best. You can get updates now by checking Settings> Update & security> Windows Update.

To confirm the updates are installed, check Settings> Update & security> Windows Update> Advanced options> View your update history.

    Thanks,

    Josh

Initial result from the 2/17/2016 update was my SP4 i5 256 went from occasionally not waking from sleep, to always not waking from sleep.  I did a reset, which is a pain, but so far, fingers crossed, it is now waking from sleep. Battery still drains while supposedly sleeping.  Still gets inexplicably warm when plugged in.  But at least it's usable again.

The improvement from doing the reset leads me to wonder if there was some setting or software I had that interfered with the update?  For example, I had set Battery Saver to always be on whenever on battery.  I have also not enabled "Hello" this time, which was enabled before the reset.  It was kind of gimmicky anyway.  There are sooooo many settings it's hard to know which ones if any might have been a factor.  I'm going to take it slow in customizing any settings from factory defaults, and in adding back other software.

This is a wonderful product but really unstable.  MS has pushed innovation the last couple of years at the expense of stability.  Not a good trade off, in my view.  "It just works" has to be the response of the users, or there will be pitchforks and torches.  Something like waking from sleep is so incredibly basic, and has been a feature on a wide variety of machines for years, so it is pretty much expected.  I'm not at all technical; don't know what it takes to make this stuff work.  But frankly, I don't think I should have to.  It should just work.  That is the expectation, and I think it is reasonable.

As posted previously, this update has solved the sleep issues on my i7/8/256.  Like others, I had just set everything to hibernate rather than sleep but I'm happy that sleep is finally working for me now.

Sorry to hear the update has caused sleep issues for others...I love the surface as a product but it was frustrating when the thing wouldn't behave.

Just a quick reply to Adanowitz on his theory.

When I updated mine, it was unplugged, but I'm pretty sure I did have the keyboard attached although it may have been folded over the back.  I definitely had a micro-sd card in it.  It took two reboots to finish everything and its been perfect since.  Maybe a coincidence or maybe there's something to your theory.

To those experiencing battery drains while sleeping...One thing I changed was the setting to allow it to stay connected to wifi during sleep.  I  turned the feature off and haven't experienced the battery drain since.  Maybe something else to try?

Since the 2/17 update this issue is much worse. It used to be that my Surface Pro 4 would occasionally not wake from sleep. Since the update it every single time. I even did a system reset and the issue persists. It seems to be okay if I hibernate instead of sleeping, so it seems to only be an issue with sleep.
