Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

I am going to try your setting. Different combination of setting may  work. What are your setting on power button and sleep button (not applicable on SP4).

    Hi all,

some time has passed since I last complained about this apparent bug here.

At this time, I can say that my Surface wakes just fine. For the past few weeks, that is. I don't know if this will stick, though.

I am running a Surface Pro 4, i5 256 model, since launch here in Europe and haven't done a single reset. I installed the updates last week, which upgraded my display driver to version 4364 (no insider or beta drivers). I have the keyboard cover attached at all times and usually attempt to power the Surface by pressing a key, which works only if it is in sleep, not in hibernate. In the latter case, I have to use the power button, which works on the first try lately.

The problems actually disappeared for me before the last update already, so I am not sure, whether or not this helped at all, however, I didn't use the Surface much for about a week before the update, so maybe I missed the wake-up problem because I simply didn't try.

Anyways, I am using the following power plan (edited the default balanced plan):

Sleep > Hibernate after > On battery: 30 Minutes

Sleep > Hibernate after > Plugged in: 120 Minutes

Power buttons and lid > Lid close action > On battery: Sleep

Power buttons and lid > Lid close action > Plugged in: Sleep

I omit the other settings, since I never use the power or sleep button to send the Surface to sleep (they're all set to sleep).

I have not noticed significantly elevated temperatures during sleep. Usually, the device is cold when I wake it up. Neither have I noticed the battery drain issue. After a couple of hours on battery in sleep, the Surface wakes up with about 97% battery left. Obviously, there is some drain, but for me it is not as significant as some have reported here.

After experiencing the absence of this totally annoying bug for a couple of weeks I can understand how it takes time to develop a fix. Since all devices have essentially the same hardware, yet some show the bug and some don't, the problem seems to be quite arbitrary and might be hard to reproduce.

I am pretty sure I didn't change anything lately, that would explain why my Surface is waking up properly now.

Are you guys using the power button to force sleep or do you also just close the lid and let it go about its business? And how do you wake it up? I usually open the lid, which does nothing, and then try pressing the enter key. Sometimes it needs a long press or maybe two until I hear a very subtle click sound, then the monitor comes on. If that doesn't work, it's in hibernate and I press the power button (once), which produces the click sound and the Surface logo flashes. The click is the important bit, since it occurs earlier than the screen coming to life. From past experience, if I don't hear the click within one or two seconds of pressing the power button, it won't come on at all.

Note that a couple of weeks back this did not work for me either and I was forced to use the hard restart method. The CTRL+ALT+DEL and WIN+P workarounds never worked for me, by the way.

Let's see how long it lasts, I doubt it's gone forever.

We have to push MS to fix the problem(s) in this forum or return our money. I am tired of it. MS does not sell the SP4 as its advertised. I still have 10 days to return mine at the Best Buy because I am an Elite Plus member.
