Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

My fellow early adopters. I may have discovered a solution that seems to address the non-waking screen and poor battery life.

I've disabled "Fast-Start". Also to extend my battery life I've enable "battery saving mode". Adjusting both settings have increased my battery substantially and has so far remedied the non-waking screen issue. However, I must paint these statements with the caveat that further testing is required.

I remain optimistic that MS will continue to investment of this tech and hear our voices. They have a unique market with the Surface and it would be tremendously disappointing to ignore these rather disturbing bugs.

    Good luck!

I think he might be on to something here. I have also disabled fast startup this morning and have not had the non-waking screen issue all day, and I was experiencing it daily before. My guess is none of us have messed with that setting since it says it's only applicable for shutdowns. I'll report back after a few more days.

Please let us know if disabling fast startup changes the very warm back of SP4 during sleep.  Is it cool now?

    Hi ctuchsch

More than one restart (not shutdown) may be needed to successfully install updates.

    1. Go to Start, and select Settings > Update & security > Windows Update.
    2. Select Advanced options, and select View your update history.
    3. If any update has a status of “Requires a restart to finish installing”, restart (don't shut down) your Surface.
    4. Go back to Step 1 and repeat until no update has a status of “Requires a restart to finish installing.”

Example of update history where updates have status of "Requires restart to finish installing":

If you continue to experience difficulty and/or updates were not successfully installed you may opt to manually install updates from the recently updated msi file found here.  For help with this please see the section titled "Download and install Surface updates manually" in the Install Surface and Windows updates article.

Please let us know your experience after confirming successful installation the most recent updates.

    Thanks,

    Josh

I checked and the updates were all installed correctly , but I went ahead and manually downloaded and installed the msi file. I then re-enabled connected standby in the registry (I had disabled it to force hibernation).  I rebooted. No progress, the problem persists. As others report and as it was before I tried this, I turn it on after sleep and the keyboard comes on but nothing else. I am forced to hard reset.

The dock might also be involved in some cases. Last night, I used the Surface Platform Installer to reinstall the new driver, and it seemed to sleep and wake fine the 3-4 times I tried it. Earlier today, when I finally put it into the dock in my office, it wouldn't wake at all.

I suspect if you let it sleep more than 2 hours, it won't wake.  In the dock, did it sleep for 2 hours?  You might want to try using hibernate instead after 2 hours docked.  Even then, when sleeping for the first 120 mins, it runs warm! But wakes.
