Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

I am with you on this one...

As I have said before, if apple was to put out a device similar to the Surface, and running MacOS instead of iOS, I would definitely jump on it. At least with Apple, you know that the device when coming out of the box would just work (it is then up to you to break it ;)). The key here though is that the basic functions of the 'computer' would work as intended and expected. With all the false advertisement produced by Microsoft, I keep finding myself just hoping and waiting for MSFT to fix the bugs. This is not acceptable at this price point, and for a device made by Microsoft...

Sadly, it is too late for me to return it, as I have been waiting and hoping for too long.

Back to my trusty macbook pro. Don't get me wrong, the macbook has its issues as well, and I am not too excited as to where Apple is taking MacOS, but for my day to day, it is still more reliable and useable than the Surface.

If I close the lid on my macbook, it will go to sleep and won't drain the battery extensively. This is kind of an important feature on a laptop (even more so on a tablet), and shouldn't be that complicated a challenge for Microsoft to fix. I am sure they have a few software engineers that could solve this problem...

    Anyway... the disappointment continues.

Not a stupid question. Leaving it in hibernate is fine and seems to work 100% of the time. Doesn't get hot, no battery drain, etc. I think people complain about the sleep issue because it takes longer to boot up (which seriously isn't that long or a big deal) but it should just work. It seems like such a simple function that is available and works for nearly every other computer. For people who don't know much about computers and experience this issue, I'm sure they hate this (like everyone) and might not know what to do.  I will be switching back to hibernate after I do some more tests.

Actually I have a type cover, and having it hibernate doesn't work 99.9% of the time now. I now do a full shut down every time, which is silly but its either that or a hard reset via press-and-hold power button.

After 2 more days of testing I can almost confirm the cover keyboard is causing my sleep issue. I noticed that on the first day.

Without the cover keyboard I can sleep, wake, hybernate, wifi on background, no battery drain.

With the cover one I have to use hybernate. I really don't care that much for sleep vs. hybernate but for a $1600 devices I want it to just work. If none of you had the issue I would think I have a faulty cover or device, but that's not the case.

Have to decide today if I want to return the device. And frankly, with Skylake Macbook Airs just around the corner at 2/3 the cost, don't know why I'm still holding onto the Surface. Microsoft is keeping quiet, no tweets, no acknowledgement no anything...

I appreciate it! Yes it is annoying and a machine at that once should just work. I hope I continue to have positive user experience because I want to like the Surface line but if it continues to not work the way all computers should I will be returning it. Costco 90 day return policy is the best !!
