Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

It's amazing how a computer you build yourself would never have such an odd array of issues.

But a closed system with very few hardware configurations takes MONTHS to figure out?

Aren't we fortunate to have such an intimate experience with our "more-than-a-tablet" device?  Sigh.  Just happened to me.  Again.  This is with Hibernate set everywhere.

I am one of the lucky people that the Feb 17th updates seemed to have fixed everything. I now get a fail-to-wake-from-sleep about once a month under pretty heavy use. I also have a SP3, btw, and I get the same fail-to-wake-from-sleep at about the same rate.

But one thing I've noticed that is "odd" - when the SP3 came out there were constant firmware updates. With the SP4 the rate is very low. I can speculate, but I'd be willing to bet it has to do with this issue.

Have you tried the following combined keystrokes to reset the display adapter when the black screen occurs:  control+windows+shift+B

Unfortunately, yes, I've tried that many times, it worked once - but I think it was just a coincidence as sometimes there is a delay in the screen appearing by a couple of seconds.  My routine is Win+p, Win+p wait Win+p, Ctrl+alt+del, power+volume-up simultaneously (2 - 3 times) followed by ctrl+win+shift+B, close-reopen type cover try enter, enter, close type cover - attache power, open type cover, try again, close type cover detach power, open type cover, try again.  Finally, hold power down for about 20 seconds till machine turns off, then turn back on, reopen everything, start working and repeat next time the screen won't wake up.

Sadly, this is pretty close to what I do, too.  It totally destroys your train of thought or any possibility of using the device in a "quick" mode, since the entire process takes several minutes, especially if you have to reopen programs and documents or wait for web pages to reload.  (FWIW, Ctl-Win-Shift-B has never worked for me in hundreds of tries.)

I had a potential client ask me to stop trying to get the SP4 working the other day.  The Surface Pro 4 is really unusable as shipped - I can never use it in front of clients/customers again.  (And I paid thousands of dollars for this cr4p?) I'm not entirely certain, but in retrospect, I don't think I've ever been able to waken mine after its slept for more than 15-20 minutes.

I did get a kick out of one review on the MS Store site saying that the SP4 is the thinnest and lightest Desktop PC available!  Too True!
