Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

Aaaaand some 6 hours later... and it's baaaack.  Didn't change any of the settings they made (all "Sleep" settings) other than logging in with Hotmail/Microsoft account.  Came home just now and checked - sure enough, had to hard reset.

    So...NOTHING.

Aaaand back already from store - got notification much earlier than expected.  Thought it was too soon to be of any use.

    Aaaand I was right.

All they did was remove Preview, revert everything to regular Windows 10 that's publicly available, "run hardware diagnostics" which apparently confirmed this isn't a faulty unit, and then tested Sleep a few times.

I was exasperated with the conversation with the person who returned it to me - essentially he said they are aware of the problem, it is less, it "happens sometimes", and there is no known permanent solution ("what do you want me to tell you - they haven't told us anything else").

    So, a load of nothing.

Anyway, for now at least Sleep is working.  I guess I will have to assume that the Preview builds were at fault - for my instance at least.  And let's try this for a few days and see how many times it happens again.

Sigh.  Sorry all - no good news to report.

So I went to a store last evening.  Very helpful tech.  Admitted they have seen the problem - both sleep as well as battery life - but it has been decreasing since Feb update.  Told her Feb update did not help - only worsened.  So they have kept it for testing to remove preview OS to isolate the cause as either software (unreleased OS update) or hardware.

Expect to hear back by Friday evening.

That's very helpful of you indeed, LordZemus.  I will try this evening at a nearby store and report back.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to add my experience as it may help.

Like a lot of people here I had the #nowake sleep crash issue on my surface 4. My machine also displayed a noticeable screen flicker when set at low brightness.  It had been working up until the Feb 17 update at which point it started failing.  I set my machine to hibernate and followed this thread hoping for some news from Microsoft on a possible fix.  I also tried everything to fix it including completely wiping the device and restoring with a factory build several times, not installing various third party drivers, ect.  Nothing worked, my device regularly crashed during sleep.  I concluded therefore that this is a hardware problem.

I don't really understand the technical aspects of the sleep study, but i usually look at two different values when i read my sleep study. The first is the amount of time my surface goes to sleep before it hibernates and the second is the amount of mWH it consumes. Before i would get green values with my sleep study. My surface would enter sleep and the 60 minutes before it entered hibernation it would consume around 149 mWh. This though would cause my surface to wake up unreliably. After installing the deezer music preview app i get red values. During the 60 minutes before my surface hibernated, I would have a sleep drain of around 479 mWH. This though would allow my surface to wake up more reliably. If your surface never hibernates and it sleeps with red values then it could be leading to battery drain. I did leave my surface to sleep with the red values active for 8 hours straight and i received a report that my battery had drained 8%.

OK, not trying to monopolize the forum (I'll shut up now), but I have a question for the group:

Does anyone here *really* know how to read and interpret a sleepstudy report?  I'm having a hard time making heads or tails of mine, and I don't have the time or inclination to try to find docs on something so obscure.

(I *think* mine is showing that my SP4 is never in DRIPS at all, which could help explain the terrible battery life.)

(Oddly, this is the ONLY thing that changed before my SP4 started waking from sleep - maybe it was "Scared Straight" by the sticker?  Not that I expect waking to become a regular thing, but it did wake this afternoon after sleeping for a couple of hours, and only lost a few % on the battery.)

Apparently, because I shut it down the night before due to video driver flakiness (that's still a problem, for sure), I missed that my SP4 got some Windows Updates on the 12th.

Since then, I have not had any failures to wake, so something has improved quite a bit, at least for me.  (I've only tried it three times - I just haven't trusted it when not docked.  Maybe I can try using it as intended, now?)

Unfortunately, battery life is still fairly bad (probably 3-4 hours, tops, projecting it out), so all is not well yet, but it now wakes (way more often than before), and I suppose that's very welcome progress.  (Never thought I'd be excited about that - sleep and instant wake is supposed to be a given on smart devices in 21st century...)

Here's what I'm running now, it seems to be a big improvement, based on a rather small sample size of 3(!) sleep sessions.  ;-)
