I installed all 14 updates (YES literally 14 mostly driver updates and mostly from Intel), rebooted, and the firmware update on the third progress install ran the fan high and seemingly crashed before it finished. At this point I thought I was bricked, or
at the very least screwed. Once it booted up, I noticed in device manager I only had 4 items under firmware (vs the normal 5) and one had an exclamation point. I restarted the computer without being prompted and it finished installing the part of the firmware
it failed on (fan ran high again on this but it completed). Impressive how it "self-healed" here. Once in windows everything looked good, device manager had 5 items under firmware, no exclamations points, not more windows updates, or hidden windows updates
with the Surface Diagnostic Tool, etc...
I then changed everything off of hibernate to default settings and sleep. Plus changed it so it doesn't stay connected to WiFi and saves power when it knows I'm away for Cortana.
On battery, put it to sleep with the power button for 5 minutes...it worked. Then put it to sleep for 30 seconds twice by closing the type cover...it worked. Then put it to sleep using the type cover and went to the gym for an hour. Returned and IT WOKE,
and drained very little battery! Closed the cover, took a shower, it again woke 20 minutes later. Just be be clear, before today's update, it NEVER woke if I let it sleep for more than 2 or so minutes, and then if I let it sleep for 30 seconds it woke maybe
1/3rd of the time, at best. So far this seems like a large improvement, about the size of the updates improvement. And I have lot 1541, got my unit at Best Buy on day one 10/26/2015, so I have very early hardware.
If I encounter problems I'll post but so far this is LOOKING GOOD, which is more than I can say for ANY other long attempt at sleep since the night of 2/17.
I had NO hopes, and fully expected to be disappointed, but I am now cautiously optimistic!!! Let's see how it does overnight.
