Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

I installed all the updates as well 4/19, it was great for about 12 hours then it black screeened again. So much for the fix

Me too. One thing to check, though, open a command prompt with elevated privileges and run "SFC /scannow." See if this finds any corrupted system files. If it finds some and can't fix them, then use the instructions here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/947821 to fix your windows Install. I don't know if this will completely fix the fails to wake issue, but at least it fixes something with Windows.

I was chatting with a particularly helpful Microsoft rep on an unrelated Reddit thread, and I described the issues we're all having here, in some detail.  This was his response...

"It's definitely a software/driver problem. I don't work on the surface specifically, so I don't have all the details, but I do know this problem is a whack-a-mole. They fix one cause of it, it uncovers another, and there's still five others. Sorry I can't be more helpful, it's an issue that is annoying us just as much as you guys."

This is absolutely stunning to me...

I am actually beginning to believe that Microsoft doesn't yet know or understand the problem here.

What we know is that some surface pro's are not fixed by firmware updates...

...some surface pros are fixed by firmware updates...

... and some surface pros do not have a problem with deep sleep and never crash, WHATEVER firmware they use.

The replacement I was given is one of the latter type.  This points to variation in quality between the devices.  Either its the intel skylake chip (which I can believe) or another part that has variable performance.

Whatever the case, Microsoft IS NOT IN CONTROL OF THEIR HARDWARE STANDARDS!

Such variation is unacceptable for a company like this.  You can't give 50 percent of your clients perfect devices and the rest faulty, and then spend months... no years, trying to patch up with little firmware fixes.  Someone in management just doesn't want to own up to the fact that some of these devices are just too inferior to be fixed.

This situation is really sad and pathetic.  Given the totally unreliable nature of this hardware, I'd think twice about ever buying from this company again.  Which is sad because the working ones are great machines...
