Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

They didn't say and I didn't ask, at this point I really don't care and Frankly refurbs are in like new condition anyway so I have no idea why people get all bent out of shape at the possibility.

tl;dr version:  I'll tell you why:  Because the quality of what Microsoft is shipping out as "factory refurbished" is more like "factory rubbish".  They are definitely not all in "like new" condition. This isn't an anti-Microsoft rant, it's real, personal, very painful experience.  If you have a choice, make sure you get a new unit.  Don't say I didn't warn you...

Here's my real-life travail with this:

I had some hardware problems getting my original SP3 and dock to work and recognize video correctly.  I took it back to the store several times and they swapped out both the SP3 unit and one of the docks.  (I had two, each with an identical Dell P2815Q monitor attached (don't buy!!), one worked, one didn't.  Sorting this out took almost two months, and the one dock and monitor never really worked right, but it got to a tolerable level of not-working.  (I eventually traced it down to firmware in ONE of the monitors.  There's no upgrade, so I got rid of that one last summer.

All was bliss with the SP3 and at least the dock and monitor at home - until - the fan bearing started to chew itself up.  This started as a slight buzz when rotating the SP3 while using it as a tablet, and over the course of the next few weeks, rapidly worsened.

I contacted Microsoft support, and was told that they could ship me a replacement, but if I wanted to do the swap quickly, I needed to let them go ahead and charge my credit card for another unit, so they could ship out the replacement right away rather than shipping me a box and waiting to get my broken unit back.  I reluctantly agreed, and received the FIRST BAD REPLACEMENT several days later.

FIRST BAD REPLACEMENT problems: EXTREMELY unstable, OS image was clearly botched, and the unit was so unstable that I'm sure there was a hardware problem.   This probably shouldn't have made it out of the factory in this condition.  I needed a working SP3, though, so I went to store, checked it in with the techs, who tried restore, reset, and for all I know, sacrificing a goat under a full moon, but it still wasn't right, so I called support again and had them send me another.  This took longer, since they wouldn't ship out a second replacement until they had received the first one back, and express shipping is only used to ship replacements out - returns go back by slowest/cheapest available.  By now, the fan in my original SP3 was starting to make a buzzing noise all the time it ran, like a cute little tablet chainsaw...

Eventually, I received the SECOND BAD REPLACEMENT, and sent the first one back...  I hardly even fired this one up - it was scuffed and scratched, and so beat up that the kickstand was bent and bowed to the point that it would not rotate much past 90 degrees, since the bowed-out area then hit the back of the case.  HOW did this EVER get shipped to a customer?!  I mean, it wasn't even close to acceptable!  I again contacted support, and had them send me an express label for the return, since that would cut several days off the process, and I *really* need a new SP3 before I leave town for Thanksgiving!  MS assures me that they will have the new replacement there by Monday.  I don't believe them, which is a good thing, because the THIRD BAD REPLACEMENT doesn't show up until Wednesday morning, just as we're about to leave.  I pack it, hoping that I'll get some downtime to finally get everything moved off my still-suffering SP3, whose fan now wedges stopped with a buzzing crash if I carry it normally without shutting it down first. (Gee, kinda like an SP4, now that I think about it...)

Photos showing scuffs (hard to see, looked worse in real life) and the kickstand opened until it hits the case:

Anyway, lat about 11:00 one night, I take out the THIRD BAD REPLACEMENT and fire it up (after backing up my data to finally move off my long-suffering "Buzz Surface", and can't even believe my ears:  It's fan is EVEN LOUDER than the one in mine (although it doesn't wedge stopped - it's got that going for it...)  THIS IS RIDICULOUS!  Again, there's just NO WAY though should have gotten past even a cursory check.  I didn't even go through the OS config - it was that bad.  I had a video of this, but can't find it and I don't think could post it here anyway.  Let's just say that there's no way I'm exaggerating here - people in the OTHER ROOM were asking what that horrible noise was!

I figured, three strikes and you're out, so I called my Support rep, who was shocked and apologetic through the whole debacle, and told him I wanted a NEW replacement.  He said they CAN'T do that - only the stores can, but that it's unlikely that the stores have any i5/8/256 SP3s in stock now that the SP4 was shipping.

And that (minus a few other even more comical and unbelievable things later on) was my experience withTHREE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, REALLY BAD "REFURBISHED" SP3s IN A ROW...

Microsoft really did try to be helpful through this two-month ordeal, but it's clear they have near-zero quality control on refurbs.  The first one I can let slide, maybe, but there's just no way the last two should have made it through even the most cursory of inspections, much less landed in a customer's hands...

Moral: You're *really* taking your chances if you let Microsoft send you a "refurbished" Surface!
