Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

    I just spent about 2 hrs with Microsoft help online and they reinstalled several drivers on my Surface Pro 4. I am hoping that this will fix the issue. It seems like I had quite bit of updates which is strange as I check updates almost every day. I will give it a try for a week and report back.

    Is anyone else having exactly this problem?

    I have a Surface Pro 4 set to sleep when lid closes and shutdown when power button pressed.  If it is sleeping and I press the power button by mistake.  The Surface sometimes (maybe not always) goes into a zombie state.  It doesn't shut down.  It doesn't wake up.  It does nothing.  No lights.  No screen.  No response to power button.  Just a Surface Pro 4 that looks turned off.  I suspect it's not really turned off since it won't respond to a normal press of the power button.  The only way to revive it is with the a 15-second power button shutdown and all the data damage that causes.

    If this is a known problem, is there a good work around? 

    This is probably the most documented, most complained about, most discussed issue with the sp4.  See THISenormous thread for more info.  Some people have been able to fix this problem by recovering/resetting their sp4 and then manually applying all the driver an firmware updates.  Others have swapped out their sp4 for a refurb and have encountered the same problem.  Some have gone to a Microsoft retail store(highly recommended) and swapped out their sp4 for a new recently manufactured new unit with good success.  Don't get the impression that all sp4s have this problem; mine, for instance, does not.  Using hibernate exclusively is an effective work around for some.

    In the last week I've done the following:

    • Run the Surface Diagnostic toolkit and updated the few drivers that it identified
    • Run the latest 4/19 update
    • Ensured that my power profile is set to go from sleep -> hibernate after 60 minutes both on battery and plugged in.

    So far I've had no issues in the week doing this.

    I did have an issue the first night, not having set my power plan as above.  I flipped the lid closed at the end of the workday, undocked and went home, at which time the Surface was very hot in my bag.  I strongly suspected that, by suspending it while plugged in and then unplugging it, it didn't go into hibernate and therefore overheated.  Since changing the suspend->hibernate for both AC and battery modes, I have had no issues since.
