Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

Went to Costco yesterday and saw that their floor model Surface Pro 4 was stuck unable to wake from sleep (now that's what I call truth in advertising!) and my surface apparently hot-bagged overnight, ran out of juice, died, then had to be restarted again this morning.

Never a dull moment for us surface users!

I also have the sfc /scannow error on my new unit, but so far no sleep issues yet.  Seems to be unrelated.

I have been using the SP4 since launch and had been having the wake from sleep issue.  It got worse after the Feb 19 update.  I got a refurb device a week ago and had the same issue.  Went to the store 2 days ago and got a new unit.  The new unit seems to be working fine the last 48 hours.  Fingers crossed...

I am getting a new error that pops up periodically, "the operating system is not presently configured to run this application".  I was also having the same issue on the refurb unit earlier.  Any thoughts on how to identify the offending application without having to uninstall and reinstall everything?  It has been very frustrating.

SFC definitely seems to be crying, "Wolf!" to me...

NO third party software on Start Menu.  To try to minimize problems, this thing's as close to pure as the wind-driven snow as I can make it and still do my work.  (And besides, I've never seen any third-party Start replacement that wasn't just awful...)

I used to think profile was related to this, but no longer do.  Apparently whatever is causing this is in Windows, not my profile, since the profile was preserved through this Reset cycle and the problem appears to be fixed now.  (MS Store suggested the new user profile juggle and I tried that back in February, but it was just different, not better - if anything, it was *less* stable.  This SP4 started with a clean profile except for the Firefox session file.)

The fact that it's better now (and the profile did NOT change) points more to the Registry than the User Profile proper (\Users[username]\AppData\*) as the source of corruption.  (I *expect* that part of the Reset process is wiping the Registry and starting over (or at least wiping or pruning HKLM and probably HKCR, if not all or part of HKCU, too, for those familiar with Registry-speak) and this is one of the big reasons you have to reinstall apps after a Reset, even if you preserve user files and configuration.)

This did start in the day or two (not sure about exact timing) after I installed Corel PDF Fusion for the first time on this machine to assemble a big composite PDF.  This may be completely coincidental and not at all related, but it's one of only two things *I* changed around the time of the corruption showing up again.  (The other was the installation of an HP-15C calculator application from HP France (http://www.calculatrices-hp.com/index.php?page=emulateurs

    • the apps themselves can be installed to use English.)  The calculator is running now with no apparent problems...)

One other possibly relevant datapoint:  CorelDraw X4 definitely scrogged Windows 8 (forget the failure mode now...), but I upgraded to X7 a year ago, which fixed that.  Is there something new in Win10 that's brought something like the old problem back?
