Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

    For me, after July 14 update including the Anniversary Update, the Sleep of Death problem never occurred until this morning. For these almost two months, nothing bad happened with completely the default setting. So I was very happy. But all of sudden, it didn't wake up this morning. After a hard restart, it started working again, and it woke from sleep. Since July 14, I put the USB Root Hub (xHCI) power management on without any problem until this morning. I'm very curious why the SoD problem suddenly reappeared, and whether it might happen again... The latest update I applied was  that on MS Office stuff on Sep. 7. Would that update affect the sleep problem?

    This isn't working for me and I'm relying g on my Surface for a presentation tomorrow. Screen is black, light is on under keyboard, won't power down. HELP

    Hi Carolyn, I sympathise completely as this is frustrating as I like many others here had this issue since last year and every firmware update promised a fix and did nothing.

    I see you're responding to a very old posted method.

    I can tell you that this issue was resolved 100% for me with a clean install of the anniversary update. I did an in place upgrade via windows update which worked fine but I wanted a completely clean image including all the recovery partitions to be recreated so there is no remnant of the old build. Since then it has never failed to wake from sleep and I do have an old LOT number model.

    After the Anniversary update ... SP4 usually wakes ok, but have had the error that it cannot turn on the camera. This is a new error. I'm almost giving up.

    On the (slightly OT) subject of related wake-from-sleep errors unique to the SP4, I sometimes get application lockups when waking from sleep. Has anybody else seen this? What happens is that the app that was full screen and in focus when the SP4 slept (has happened to both Edge and Maps) is no longer in focus after waking, and doesn't respond to mouse, touch or pen input. However, it repaints and adapts to window size changes, but needs to be shut down from the Task Manager.

    I wonder if this is in some way related to the more serious "sleep of death" issue, since I have only seen this on SP4, and it happens in the same situations as the classic SoD (wake from sleep and user switching). The fact that the application is no longer maximized implies some kind of spurious display state change, but I'm only speculating here. The fact remains that waking from sleep is still a gamble.

    For my part, after the AU, I see the SoD in about 1% of the wake events, which amounts to once every couple of days. I'm now going to replace my device because the touch screen is starting to fail on me (that legendary Surface quality again), so we'll see what that does to the incidence rate.
