Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

This is the exact issue I have! Surface Pro 4 brand new, goes to sleep and does not come back! I see the keyboard lights though!

This issue is caused by a Surface Pro 4 display driver timeout error when waking up from sleep. 

This makes Surface Pro 4 one of the most unreliable Windows 10 machine out in the market today. 

The typical answer given by Microsoft Tech support is to hold the power (and volume up) button for 20 seconds and force reboot which is ridiculous!

If anyone from Microsoft Surface team is reading this, please fix this.**A tablet (a tablet that can replace your laptop) should not fail to wake up 30-40% of time!!**This makes it completely useless and unreliable for its intended use as a tablet and for note taking.

I have spend countless hours troubleshooting this (using WinDbg tool) and this is the error from the crash dump file: 

VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED (117)

The display driver failed to respond in timely fashion.

Arguments:

Arg1: ffffe00102988010, Optional pointer to internal TDR recovery context (TDR_RECOVERY_CONTEXT).

Arg2: fffff80118d86770, The pointer into responsible device driver module (e.g owner tag).

Arg3: 0000000000000000, The secondary driver specific bucketing key.

Arg4: 0000000000000160, Optional internal context dependent data.

NOTE : For those hopeful souls, I would like to let you know that this issue is not fixed with the latest Windows 10 TH2 (November, 2015) update either. 

We'll just have to wait and see what the latest updates do to improve the problem.  As for me, upgrading to new (Lot 1618) hardware has eliminated the Sleep of Death/DarkWake problem (almost, I've encountered it once, but in an unusual way), but now my SP4 crashes and reboots itself pretty much every night (oddly, most frequently at 2:34 AM).  This is likely a driver problem of some sort (looks like tcpip.sys), and I fear I'm in for yet another day-long Reset and reinstall, reload, reconfigure, restore data cycle to fix this.

I'd love to be able to keep my session state overnight, but I guess if I have to live with a failure, a daily predictable one in the middle of the night is preferable.

Although I really appreciate being able to wake, there's a serious instability problem: Of the 16 days I've had this SP4, there are only three days that it hasn't crashed, and one of those was over the 4th of July weekend when it was asleep for two days.  The most usual failure modes are the spontaneous midnight reboot and the failure of all Modern apps (including Start/Cortana/Action Center).  The latter is responsible for nearly all the Application Failures in the reliability report below (sometimes several a day - those don't show), and always clears with a reboot, but any reboot is a real pain.  I want a computer that, like my phone, goes MONTHS between reboots, and just works in between.


I will say that I think the new Intel graphics driver may be a real improvement in a couple of respects - the "Intel Droppings" problem in Firefox is gone (I think - I can't easily provoke it as I could before), and the cursor seems to less frequently freeze and then catch up a second or two later.  Since SoD is at least partly, if not entirely, a failure of the video to wake up, I expect his is an important part of any improvements we'll see.

Overall, new hardware seems to have helped some, the new software seems to have also helped some, but I suppose we're waiting another two and a half weeks to see if this still all works after the 8/2 Redstone update, and if general stability gets better with that release.

I am curious - are the newer lots after 1613 not seeing this problem at all?  Or is it just not as often?  I have a store close by and a previous technical issue that may allow an exchange.

Having been on this thread for quite a while now, it sure seems like there are far fewer complaints about lot 1611 or 12 and later than earlier production runs. Purely anecdotal evidence of course... That said, I had three early versions and all performed horribly as far as waking from sleep reliably. My lot 1613 always wakes from sleep, gets better battery life and is noticeably faster than my first three SP4s. In fact it was performing perfectly until the June 20 update borked up it hibernating after a set time in sleep mode. Now, it often fails to hibernate, instead staying in standby for 24 hours till the battery drops dead. Maybe the 7/14 update will fix it--at least until another poorly tested update messes it up again.

I am curious - are the newer lots after 1613 not seeing this problem at all?  Or is it just not as often?  I have a store close by and a previous technical issue that may allow an exchange.
