Surface Pro 4 - Screen won't wake from sleep

I received my Surface Pro 4 today and it worked fine. I put it on "sleep" for awhile, came back and turned it on. Once again it worked fine. I made an error and instead of putting it on "sleep" I  hit the power button to turn it off when I finished. Now it won't come on at all. The screen stays dark. If I push the power button I can see lights under the keyboard keys, then if I hit the power switch again they go off. But nothing happens to the screen no matter what I do. Has anyone else suffered from this?

It works fine for me after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 Pro (Version 1607). It no longer goes into a coma.

I just traveled all week. Put my Surface Pro 4 (SP4) to sleep 10 to 20 times each day, and currently my task manager shows the up time to be 7:21:35:21 - 7 days! It is actually working the way I expected it to when I bought it!

It was such a relief to not be scared to put it to sleep during meeting breaks to save battery when working with my Pen and OneNote. For the past 7 months I've had to have it on power when in meetings so that it wouldn't go into a coma. That was always so embarrassing.

You can update to the latest version of Windows 10 by opening Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and selecting Check for updates.

Its not a proper fix but if you switch the power saving settings from sleep to hibernate the display issue seems to go away, it also resolve the issue of the surface remaining on when you close the lid and put it in a bag, potentially over heating or draining the battery without you knowing.

Click on the battery in the taskbar -> Click on "Power & Sleep Settings"(this brings up the power and sleep settings in the system settings menu)

Click on "Additional Power Settings" under "Related Settings" in the right hand pane of "Power and Sleep" in the system settings pane (which loads a new window showing the power options control panel )

Click on the "choose what the power buttons do" on the left pane and **change everything from "sleep" to "hibernate" on the pane "on battery" and "on plugged in"**and click "save Changes"

This should resolve the issue as a temporary fix while MS fix the sleep function which is likely a intel graphics driver issue, but it will take longer to boot each time and you'll get the surface logo each time as if the device is switched off completely which it is (hibernation mode is a complete power off but preserves the system state so your open apps will reopen as they were) .

Note: "closing the lid" is the same action as closing the type cover.

The trade off is that it takes a bit longer to wake but the response is consistent around the display, and it doesn't fix the underlying sleep display issue but it does seem to work.

The sleep display issue was driving me mad. MS still need to fix it, it would also be great if I could still listen to spotify like I can on an iPad in sleep mode.. and add the additional characters missing on the soft keyboard in split mode, and the rotation issue when you use the dock, and scaling apps (why does everything in office work except lync? with scaling) and a whole bunch of other minor but very irritating issues that lead to an overall poor user experience.

    Hope this helps others anyway.

    Dan.

You might want to hold on for the promised firmware update. We might get lucky

I've not noticed wifi with my anger dock, but then the point I'd to use the Ethernet.

The only problem I'd add to your list is sometimes it doesn't actually sleep. That's the only thing I've seen ms comment on, blaming the new sleep mode of the processor.

I am testing a Surface Pro 4 on loan from Microsoft for the past 4 weeks as we are considering buying 200 of them for our business here. I have to say I am VERY disappointed.

I have used AND LOVED using my Surface Pro 3 here in work for over a year and half, had the early issues as everyone else but for well over a year I have had no issues at all, maybe sometimes the keyboard not working and you disconnect and reconnect but I had none of the issues I am having with the SP4.

Issues are as follows: Sleep/Wake issues....Screen rotation issues, Recognising Tablet mode (keyboard keeps working when you flip around backwards/upside down), screen and icon sizing issues after connecting to Dell USB 3.0 docking station, and the BIGGEST one of ALL, the WiFi fails to connect and does not work when you have any USB 3.0 enabled device connected (this is being reported), including my Dell 3.0 Docking station, which means it disconnects from my corporate WiFi network and all my documents/websites on the network and shares and has to reconnect on the LAN on the docking station...I did not have this problem with the SP3.....

I have ran my SP3 for a year and a half, with my Dell USB 3.0 docking station, two 24" monitors, Microsoft wireless sculpt keyboard and mouse, network LAN (not necessary for the last 8 months), headphones, Lync phone connected via USB etc without any issues, with the SP4.... its a NIGHTMARE!!!!

Better pen experience and a higher resolution but with ALL the other issues are not worth it....right now, looks like we are going to buy Dell laptops instead for the next three years, very disappointing.....

I am having similar issues.  Wont wake from sleep.  I reset windows and have reinstalled minimal apps.  I also notice the screen is not that responsive to touch and locks.  The machine just shut down for no reason. Now on startup, I'm stuck at the black screen w/ Surface logo and spinning dots...

I am so very disappointed in the quality of this experience with the SP4/Windows 10.  I don't have similar issues on other Win 10 machines so I do believe there are issues with this product.  Very disappointing as a MSFT developer AND stockholder.
