Surface pen no longer able to highlight the article

I use the surface pen to do personal reading as well as highlighting on the article. However, recently I suddenly cannot do the highlighting  anymore. Each time I tried to highlight, the pen dragged the screen to the next page. Is this the problem with the pen or the application software?

Hi Swee,

I think what you are seeing are some Pen interaction improvements that were made in the Fall Creators update.

**Scrolling with pen.**In the effort to create a more intuitive pen interaction on Windows, we are emphasizing natural and direct manipulation of content with pen. You don’t have to “hunt and peck” for scrollbars or frequently switch between pen and touch when navigating; now you can scroll content directly and fluently as you would with your finger.

**Selection with pen.**We also revised selection with pen by giving it more control over the selection process. Not only are we showing selection grippers whenever text is selected via pen, but also are allowing for a consistent and fast selection of content – text, objects, or ink—by dragging the pen while the barrel button is pressed.

For example, if you are in Edge or a Store app you can now select text by quickly double tapping a word and then dragging the selection grippers to adjust the words highlighted OR you can press and hold the pen's barrel button while you highlight the desired text.

Hope this helps,

Greg

With all due respect please read the question in the title, and the description of the problem I have written above.

It's obvious to me that if there has been a change in the way the pen reacts with text, changing from simply gliding over the text to select it, to having to tap on a word then select the text required by moving the "handles" at the start and end of the selected word, then that's a change in the way it has been programmed to work, not a problem with the driver.

Trying to update the driver to solve a problem that is not driver related is completely futile. I can work that out and I'm not a Microsoft expert.

As I said, you can no longer select a body of text just by gliding your pen over it as highlighted in blue (see screenshot below) and I wanted to know if there is a setting somewhere that will revert it to how it used to work.

Thank you for getting back to us. Drivers run differently with different operating systems. That is why we recommended you perform the previous suggestion. You may find it easier to take the devices to a Microsoft Store for further tests. They'll be able to reproduce the problem and determine if your Pen will work differently on another Surface, or if the same problem will occur with a different Pen. Open this link to locate the nearest Microsoft Store.

Come back if you have other concerns.

    Hi,

We got you. To can submit your suggestion to our developers via the Feedback Hub. If you are new about it, you can follow these steps:

    1. Select  Add new feedback next to the search bar.
    2. Tell us whether you’re sending a problem or suggestion.
    3. In the Summarize your issue box, provide a concise but clear title for your problem or suggestion.
    4. In the Give us more detail (optional) box, you can give us more specific information, like how you encountered the problem.
    5. Select a category that corresponds to your feedback. For example, if your printer stopped working, you’d select Hardware, Devices, and Drivers.
    6. Select a subcategory—like Print for problems with printing.
    7. (Optional) Step through the problem while capturing the steps so we can see what happened.
      1. Select Recreate the problem (recommended).
      2. Select the type of problem you’re having, and select Start capture.
      3. Do the steps that led to the problem.
      4. When you’ve completed the steps, select Stop capture.

    Notes

    • You can close Feedback Hub if you need to and the capture will continue. - Even though capturing is optional, it’s a good way to help Microsoft determine the cause of the problem and address it for you and others having that problem.
    1. (Optional) Send a screenshot to help show the problem.
      1. Go to where the problem happened, press the Windows logo key + Print screen to take a picture of your screen.
      2. Select Attach a screenshot, go to the Pictures/Screenshots folder, select the screenshot you want to send, and then press Enter.
    2. When you’re satisfied with your feedback, select Submit.

    Regards.

Erwin Nga, did you look at the Feedback Hub before you posted that comment?  This issue has been documented in the pre-release Insiders Preview version since it first appeared in the beta builds in July. There are dozens of bug reports about how the new pen behavior breaks so much other functionality. Please do a search in the Feedback Hub and you'll see.

Also, here's another thread about how the Fall Creators Update has broken so much of the pen functionality in many other programs.
