SurfaceBook Crashes/Shutdowns During Sleep

My SB (i5, 256gb, 8gb, GeforceGPU) keeps crashing/freezing during sleep which causes it to shut down. According to the windows reliability monitor it has been happening every day multiple time.

I though I was going crazy because I clearly remember not turning it off before putting it to sleep. I recently had my original SB replaced with a new one which fixed most of the issues from blue screens to flickering that would not go away. But this new one still has the Hello Camera issue where it wont turn on during startup and this new problem that has popped up.

Is this caused by a hardware defect? I really don't want to drive 23km to the other side of my city to get another replacement at a Microsoft store if the issues aren't resolved. Here's an image on the report. As you can see, there are 17 critical events today not to mention all the other days as well. Thanks.

If anyone has a solution that isn't a complete factory reset or system reinstall (I've tried them before) that would be great.

    One note on that. I've had Sleep of Death in even the most minimal scenarios. The SB is my second computer so 90% of the time I'm just in my browser.

    I've had SoD with just Edge open with on tab. And in fact, one time after a SoD I started up the computer, logged in with Hello and then just left it without opening up any applications. I returned to the computer later in the day and it SoD'ed. So I don't particularly believe it's simply a problem with rogue applications not being compatible with the sleep states. It's certainly possible. I do have Java installed on this machine and I'm sure it runs that dang update check process periodically in the background. That's the only non-MS process that would have been running on a fresh boot.

    Modern Intel-based PCs support a variety of power management sleep states (S0 to S5, where S3 is “Suspend to RAM” and S4 is “Hibernate”). However, Intel's newest offerings, such as Skylake, also offer a special set of S0i”x” sleep states, including the Powered On Low Power State. What this means is that S0ix-enabled PCs can “drip” data to the device—new email, notifications, software updates—while sleeping.

    Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 are S0ix-enabled and use it exclusively. However, a complication arises when using this technology in Windows because some desktop applications are not compatible. For those cases, the applications are forced to use “a virtual S3 State.” However, this virtual sleep state could be where the issue lies.

    In summary, Surface Book only support S0ix sleep states, plus a hibernation fallback that is enabled after two hours. This resulting scheme is called Modern Standby and looks to be the issue plaguing sleep on these devices.

    Until Microsoft can fully resolve these issues, expect to see continued sleep crashes.

    I can report that this does not effect the Sleep Crash on my Surface Book. As usual it crashed after about six hours in Sleep.
