Hi Scott Braen,
Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. We're sorry for the trouble this has caused you.
I'm aware that you're having issues with your Surface device's built-in speakers, as it displays the error "no output device." I am here to help and let us work on this together.
- Would you please confirm which Surface device do you have, the Surface studio or a Surface pro?
- What version of Windows are you currently running?
- When did this issue started?
- Were there any changes made prior to this issue to happen?
Kindly try the following steps below to troubleshoot your device.
Force the device to shut down and restart
Press and hold down the power button until your Surface shuts down and restarts and you see the Windows logo screen (about 20 seconds), then release the power button.
Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check any pending updates available including optional updates.
See: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (microsoft.com)
To check for updates:
Windows 10: Go to Settings >> Update and Security >> Windows updates >> Check for updates.
Windows 11: Go to Settings >> Windows updates >> Check for updates.
Run Audio troubleshooter.
Select Start > Settings > System > Sound > Troubleshoot common sound problemsand select Output devicesor Input devices.
Manually update the drivers and firmware for your Surface.
Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Studio/Pro (depending on the device you have)
Then click the link next to Surface Studio/Pro then click Download on the next page. Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next. After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

Let me know how it goes.
