Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Crackling Sound

I've had my MS Pro 4 for a few days now. Updates are installed and it's working fine. I hear a crackling or arcing sound every once in a while. It even happens when in sleep mode. Should I be concerned or is there an explanation for this?

Sleep of death was that the SP4 just died while in sleep.

Needed a hard reboot to start (with all recent work lost of course).

Microsoft went out and said that it was fixed in an update, but it wasn't (not for me at least).

About half a year later, the problem didn't happen anymore, so Microsoft probably fixed it without informing.

And it's that lack of information/responsibility that is unacceptable.

    Especially for a $2000 laptop...

I have the "sleep of death" in addition to the crackling.  I didn't know that "sleep of death" was a thing.  Every 2-3 days I have to hard boot because it won't wake up.

    Hello,

There are many factors which cause the crackling sound on the Surface. Let's sort this out. However, to be able to understand the issue better, can you provide more details by answering these following questions:

    • Can you tell us when and where did you purchase the device?

    • Did you check if the crackling sound is recognizable with or without the power supply plugged in? Were there any differences?

    • What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?

Let us know so we can help you further.

    Hi,

as for me it is like this:

    * I did buy the Surface Pro 4 from the Microsoft Online Store Germany.

    * As I already wrote, the crackling sound only appears when the power supply is NOT plugged in. So yes there is a difference.

    * I tried all the steps mentioned in this thread.

So speaking of trying all the steps in this thread:

Two days ago I tried the current version of the Surface Diagnostic Tools. Since then the crackling noise in off mode seems to have vanished. I think it is too early to say "problem solved". I will keep you updated here.

Strangely enough several days ago my Surface suddenly started to have the "sleep of death problem", too. It occurred about every second sleep mode initiation. This seems also to have vanished since the last run of the diagnostic tools.

I will monitor the behaviour the next two weeks and get back to you here.

    Kind regards

    Hi,

I did not have to wait two weeks, because the crackling returned just one day after my last post. So I figure it was just a coincidence that I dit not hear anything the night following that post (or I simply had a really deep sleep).

But really did not have the sleep of death anymore since the usage of the diagnostic tool. Though that might also be a coincidence.

So again, please Microsoft, do something about that crackling noises!!! Those devices are just way too expensive to suffer from such an annoying problem.

    Kind regards

    An almost former Mirosoft fan

I too have not experienced the sleep of death since running the diagnostic tool, but's it's still early.

The crackling is no longer occurring when the device is sleeping on battery.  Instead, it now happens when I wake it up by pressing the power button.
